kems cracking

Posted Mon Jan 24, 2005 9:15 am GMT by dberg
Hello,

I have a set of the Alton Belle KEM's. I have played probaby 20-30 games with them at this point. Recently i started noticing a slight crack in the top of some of the cards. One of my buddies also had the same issue.

Does anybody have a problem with KEM's getting a little slit or crack on the card that can ruin the card?

Just kind of frustrating for a $30 set of cards to start cracking already.

any similar experiences or help in better storing the KEM's (currently in the KEM box) would be appreciated.

thanks
dberg

Found this, hope it helps....

Care of KEM Plastic Playing Cards

In October of 1997, KEM sent a letter to customers advising them of the proper care and storage of the company's plastic playing cards. The company recommended the following:

1. Store cards in a place with a stable temperature. Ideal temperature for storage is 68 to 72 degrees, Fahrenheit.
2. When returning cards to box after use, place a joker on top of each deck, along with a cut piece of cardboard. This serves to prevent warping.
3. When cleaning KEM cards, use lukewarm water and Dawn dish detergent. Add a few drops of vinegar to the solution. Pat dry immediately after washing. Do not apply powder to the cards.

I run a 100 man game, and we use Kem cards. I didn't get my tourney off the ground before the Kem shortage so unfortunately I didn't get my hands on enough decks of Arrow's because they were already $40-50 a set and our tourney couldn't afford these.

I originally got the Kem Royale cards. Right off I had problems. They were cracking, splitting and I wondered if either they were A.) cheap knockoffs, or B.) rejects. They were really stiff and you could tell that they weren't the quality of the arrows. They had cards missing, you name it.

I sent them back and have since purchased the old br/gr clubs. I have had less problems with these, However every once in a while a card will sliver or split.

Look and don't be fooled by Casino seconds. You can tell if Kem's have been rejected because their corners are cut or shaved by the casino or Kem to identify them as "casino seconds." Usually these are still good playable quality, but often they have dark, bleeding colors as obvious by the drunk red look of the J, K and Q.
I have owned many Kem's and I must say that for some reason (not just because they were featured on Rounders) the Arrow's are the absolute best, looking, quality, feel, weight and thickness. If you can ever find some original Arrows, I highly recommend them, or let me know if any one has them for around $30.

Kem right now is stopping production. They are working out the kinks in thier new manufacturing process. You should see the new Kems near the end of Feb.

Hopefully the new cards wont have problems.

I have owned the same Alton Belle decks, and I have had three, yes three sets all crack. I explained the problem to the seller and he gladly sent me three sets of new Copags completely free of charge.

HMMMMM,

Alton Belles, Free copags,

Lemme guess:

chessset.com?

They sold me the bad "royales" but to their enormous credit, I sent back 11 sets that were played with in three tourneys and they gave me back a full credit, and some free copags along the way.

Great customer service, bad batch of royales.
I would gladly do business with these folks when they get some better quality product in.
Like I said, I can only speak for the royales, not the other styles, so don't let this thread deter you from them.

I just had enough when I dropped a couple of cards on the floor and one of the corners just cracked right off. Very un-kem-like.

might i ask who your seller was ?

You can PM me if you would like to keep it secret. Its just frustrating. I love the kems, everything about them. But when the 2 of spades and 3 of clubs all of a sudden has a crack, you get frustrated when the cards are supposed to "last forever".

Maybe since these Alton Belle cards were made int he early 90's they have not been kept properly before being sold on ebay ?

Nope, not chessset.com.

I bought them from a seller on eBay.
