Custom Kings Crown Group Buy- Update |
|
Posted Mon Jan 24, 2005 7:20 pm GMT by slowplayray
As most of you probably know by now, I am organizing a group buy of "semi-custom" clay chips from T.R. King. I refer to them as "semi-custom" because, while the chips will use T.R. King's stock "Kings Crown" inlay, they will all be dual edge-spotted with custom colors. The Kings Crown inlay is, in return, borrowed from the former Kings Crown Casino in Las Vegas. For those wondering, the reason I decided to re-use this inlay is two-fold: 1) It has the "classic" casino look I am trying to accomplish with these chips, and 2) I have discovered from experience that group-designing an inlay is a HUGE headache (just look how hard it was to settle on the color scheme!), so it is much easier to use something already in existence. There will be no modification made to the stock inlay, but T.R. King has agreed to not make the chips in these color combinations for anyone but us, so you need not worry about security in your home game. Also, it will allow those who wish to to mix and match with the two existing Kings Crown fantasy sets - the solid color chips sold by Dice702 and the single edge-spot chips sold direct by T.R. King.
Here is the set, approximately as it will appear in it's final form. Please note I made educated guesses for a couple colors AND all monitors display colors slightly different, so "actual results may vary." Also, the gray chip will probably not have a denomination printed on it, as it will act as a "filler" chip, unless the large majority of people want it as the $0.25:
$0.25 (non-denom) Gray w/ 4 double-wide Dark Blue
$1 Dark Blue w/ double-wide White/Light Blue
$5 Red w/ dual Gray/Black
$25 Green w/ dual Pink/Light Green
$100 Black w/ dual Red/Light Turqoise
$500 Purple w/ dual White/Orange
$1000 Yellow w/ dual Green/Dark Blue
The price for this group buy will be $0.85/chip + shipping and escrow fees (if any) - I need to get it up to 5,000 chips for this price. Please post or PM me if you are definitely interested in purchasing a set of these chips, and let me know your email address and how many of each denomination you want to purchase (even if you have already done so). Once I have an idea of the numbers, we can all discuss and decide how we would like to handle the payments. Basically, we can either set up an escrow account, or each pay T.R. King separately if that does not work out to be too cumbersome. Also, I have an offer from one of the participants who lives ~5 minutes from T.R. King to pick up the chips and handle the shipping with his business account at a cost of $10 per 500 chips.
You can follow the development history of this set here.

How much does he charge for samples? I have never handled these chips, I would like a sample before committing to buying 2000 chips.

From what I can tell, he will usually send a couple out for free, and very quickly. Just visit www.trking.com and call the number listed. Tell him you are considering the custom Kings Crown group buy (he is aware of it) and he will probably shoot a couple out to you.

Is there a dead line date for making a decision of whether you are in or out?
Thanks

For what it's worth, got a big sample of his today in the mail. (After months of begging).
These are nice chips. Review will be up within a few days...but in a nutshell...these are really good chips. Put it this way...at the office today the Paulsons and the TR Kings showed up at the same time. Going head to head, more folks chose the TR Kings than Paulsons. (Granted...it was close.)
Cheers,
John

Cool, glad you agree. I always say they are my favorites. Honestly, after seeing the pics of the new Paulsons on your web site, I am even happier I am going with T.R. King :D

Yeah, I had him send me a bunch more samples yesterday so I can decide on the colors for sure (i.e. am i looking for purple or lavender, yellow, or light gold, light green or signal green, etc).

When are you planning on placing this order? Im debating which chips I want, these, the new Paulsons, or the WSOP ChipCo group buy. Ahh screw it, I'll prolly get all three.

I would like to set the final order commitment deadline at February 11, with the order being placed on February 15th.
Posted Thu Jan 27, 2005 11:50 am GMT by slowplayray
To clear up any confusion, the way we are working this buy is we are going to be placing individual orders directly with T.R. King for what is essentially going to be a "limited edition" run of chips. You can pay for shipment of your quantity directly from them.
Posted Thu Jan 27, 2005 4:17 pm GMT by PocketRocket
So just to get this through my aging decrepit mind, all orders for these chips would be placed directly with Dennis at TR King, and they will be at the .85 price, plus shipping? Is there a reference that we should use?
Note to others: Dennis is incredibly fair and cordial with shipping, pretty much just the UPS charges, rounded off (which is a little high for a 100 chip shipment at a UPS minimum of $6, but he shipped me 600 for only $10).

Correct. I suppose there will need to be some sort of reference, yes. However, if you plan on getting in on this, please let me know, so that I may keep track of who's getting how many (need to get up to the 5k minimum). I will then coordinate with Dennis on what to expect for orders and in what timeframe.
P.S. There is a good chance the $5 edge spots are changing, probably to gold/black, light gold/black, or green/black.

Is there a minimum order quantity? I would want to get 10 of each denomination, so that makes 70. When should we place the order w/ T.R. King? I assume he has to have enough orders to start making them?

I don't know what the minimum will be. Since we are placing them directly through T.R. King, he may want to set a reasonable limit to make it worth his effort. I will check with him before the order date and let you know. At the moment, though, he is sick of hearing from us...:D

I called him today and told him I'll be in on the group buy to beg for a sample. At first I was confused. I thought he had already made samples of these exact chips for the group organizer to inspect but he said he would need orders of hundreds of chips to run them to the printers. He was nice enough to still send me a regular Kings Crown chip.
We also had a little chat about the whole order process. He said T.R. King has never had a large custom group buy like us. I was trying to assure him that this thing will most likely go through, but he chuckled and said "I'll believe it when I see it."
Dennis is a really nice guy. I don't see any problems with minimums as long as he gets enough orders from all of us together. Ray, what's the total #chips interest up to now?

Just tell him it's the same bunch that got rid of his Casbah Club chips, so in a sense we're repeat customers

If I can count PocketRocket's number as "official" (can I??) then we are up around 2,700-3,000, with a whole bunch of "maybes" and "hopefullys" still. Once people start getting their samples in over the next week or so, we should be able to get up there pretty easily. It's hard to get definite answers though, let me tell ya!

Yes, but only slightly, basically to get what's closest to the mockups (i.e. is it light green or signal green? purple or lavender? yellow, light gold, or gold?). Also it looks as though the gray spots on the $5 are probably changing, most likely to a green.

I like most of the other colors, but red really needs to go with gold. See the Monte Carlo chips for proof. Their New Year's $5 chip is GORGEOUS in my opinion. Red, gray and black is ok, but... Red and green just isn't cool. I've watched this project from the first post on 2+2 and I think everything looks great, just make sure everyone really wants green on their $5. Good luck, I know you've put a ton of work into this.

Thank you for your kind words. I agree that the gold looks good on the $5, and it may end up being the final color when I get the samples (should be today). Do you have a link for the Monte Carlo chip you are referring to; I am not familiar with it?
Posted Fri Jan 28, 2005 3:57 pm GMT by warewulf619
I'm leaning towards black/gold spots on the $5 chip too. On the original $100 chip, the dark brown/gold looks really good together. Black or brown with the gold would look good.

Yeah, I'm in. The 500 number that I gave you would be a minimum, I may want more. If you don't get enough for the 5,000 minimum to secure the price, I'd be interested in a group buy for their stock Kings Crown chips as well. Dennis quoted me .80 for quantities of 1000 or more, and their standard .75 for 5000 or more.

They're exactly like the stock Kings Crown chips, but with different edge spots. Get samples of those if you want to see what these will be like. If you wait until the chips are made, it will most likely be too late to get some unless someone buys extra.

I believe so; looks like it's going to be:
25¢ - Gray w/ 4x double-wide (Dark) Purple
$1 - Dark Bue w/ opposing double-wide White/Light Blue
$5 - Red w/ Black/Light Gold
$25 - Green w/ Pink/Signal Green
$100 - Black w/ Red/Light Turquoise
$500 - Lavender w/ White/Fire
$1000 - Yellow w/ Green/Dark Blue
All chips will be marked w/ denominations. I will post final mockups sometime soon.

I think we may go higher than that by a bit. I'm looking at my mockups and really like these chips.

Hi,
I've just discovered the forum and noticed this group buy...I am looking for 500 chips (25, 100, 500, and 1000 only) and was wondering what the tentative cost would it be for me including delivery to Alberta, Canada?
Posted Sun Feb 06, 2005 2:26 am GMT by warewulf619
.85 cents per chip, plus shipping.
Posted Sun Feb 06, 2005 8:48 am GMT by slowplayray
| warewulf619 wrote: | | New mockups? Might get more interest. |
Here are the latest (and hopefully FINAL) mockups, based on the couple color changes we made and a couple color adjustments based on the samples I received:
And Tastic, as for shipping to Canada, you will have to check with T.R. King on that cost. We already have one guy in from Canada, and they said it wouldn't be a problem shipping there. They are very fair with shipping; it should pretty much be exact cost.
Posted Wed Feb 09, 2005 6:38 am GMT by slowplayray
Feb 11 is the deadline for commitment, folks!

About the shipping to Canada thing - I placed my order with TRK today and it came to $545 US with shipping to Vancouver included for 600 chips.
Extremely reasonable I think.

The pics you have all been waiting for:
Slight problem: As you will notice in the pics, the $1 is not correct -- double spots instead of double wide. All of the chips shipped yesterday and went out like this. We need to decide what to do. Dennis said he will work with us -- we can send them back, or get a discount. I REALLY like how they turned out, haven't decided what I want to do. I got 300 of the $1 chips.

How much discount would we get? I only ordered like 10 of the $1 ones so it probably doesn't apply to me much. Does he allow reorders on these custom kings crowns or is it just a one time thing? It's been so long I forget everything.
Posted Thu Apr 07, 2005 2:22 pm GMT by warewulf619
I emailed him to ask about the discount. I'll post when I hear. I'm pretty sure these chips are now out of production. I would think if enough want additions, he will probably do them, but only for people like yourself who already ordered some.
If many want additions, we should also do it as a group buy.

I think the $100 is off too. The light turquoise make it too much like a light blue. Should've been a darker turquoise like in the mockup.

I'm pretty sure there's only one tourquoise.
copied and pasted:
Also should be noted before more ask -- the tourquoise on the $100 does not look right in the picture. It is definitely NOT the same as the lt. blue spots on the $1. The purple on the .25 is dark purple, not blue.

$1 chip update:
I got two emails from him -- one saying he would give
"25 cents credit for each $1 chip".
A later email that day said
"if a person bought 100 $1 chips, he would have a credit of $20.00"
I asked him to clarify, haven't decided what I want to do, but since I bought 300, were talking about a difference between $75 and $60. For $60, I'd rather get them redone.

I got my 100 kings crowns chips today in the mail. It was pure joy. I think I really regret not getting a full set of these, because T.R. King chips beat every other chip samples I've gotten. First reaction is everything - They looked beautiful with the classic design. IMHO the chips look and feel way better than the New JB Paulson home chips that I recently bought from the other group buy.
I'm not sure exactly , but if there's enough interest I say we get another group buy on these, and we can fix that $1 chip mishap.

I tried to take pictures last night, but my camera decided to sh!t the bed. It's too bad too, because they look awesome all lined up in the mahogany case! Can't wait to use them tonight.

I recieved mine yesterday. Unfortunately, even though I made a special trip home in order to hide them from my girlfriend, they showed up while I was gone and she found them. BUSTED! She was pissed, but these chips are worth it. I am pleasantly surprised how well the lavender chip turned out. I can honestly say that T.R. Kings are the nicest clay chip I have ever put my hands on. I don't know why some people have said they don't like T.R. Kings. Oh well. BTW, are any of you guys going to oil your chips? It's weird because the rolling edge is the only part of the chip that needs to be oiled at all.
Thanks for putting this together Ray.

Glad you were able to put your hands on the chips, sounds like you wont be putting your hands on your girlfriend anytime soon though!
I'm not going to oil mine -- like you mention, only the edges are rough. Will probably be great after a little use.

You are very welcome. :D
I do not plan to oil mine. It took too damn long to do my Casbahs, and it made the chips smell funny for too long. I am going to let nature do it's thing this time.
I am going to try and get my camera back in working order and post some more pics after work.

Just makes me wonder how much they'd be worth if TR King stopped making them and Dennis decided to use a mold that says "TR KING CHIPS"...
Posted Wed Apr 13, 2005 6:28 pm GMT by ledavatar
According to Dennis, these chips will be available for reorder, but unless we can get a 5000 chip order to get the original $0.85/chip price, it will be $0.95/chip. He says it takes about 3-4 weeks. Anyone else interested?

Can someone who wasn't in on the original order get in on this repurchase?

This was an exclusive deal for security reasons. Only people that went in on it to get the numbers around 6000 were allowed.
Btw, ahopen was at my game when the bad beat pic above was taken. He probably wants to get some and cash them in at the game Sunday!!

I haven't even gotten my order, but I'm green with envy of anyone who got the $1 chips. If I can't pick up any returns, I'll be in for a few hundred ones.

If you guys decide to open this up which you will almost for sure have to do if you want to get 5000 chip order again I may be in.

It's not going to be opened up again. Only people who ordered in the first place will be allowed. Feel free to start a new one with different colors.

I was thinking about doing a cutom inlay with the Casbah Club theme but a buddy of mine backed out on the order so I dont know for sure if I want to now, Ill obviously post if I decide to do it. I still dont get why you guys are so worried about security with this set....

I decided that it would take years for the edges to look good, so decided to oil them. A little research and I found that Johnson and Johnson Baby Gel, not oil, was a good choice.
I just finished - they look amazing and aren't too oily. In total it took about 3 hours for 600 chips, watching TV as I did it.
I'll post pics in a few days. Highly recommended though.

definitely need to see pics, please.
i noticed with my casbahs that they didn't really hold the oil. after a month of use, they pretty much looked like they did out of the box again.

Just curious, anybody know if TRK does shaped inlays and to what price?

They don't have the manufacturing capability to do shaped inlays anymore.

Ray- same thing happend with my casbahs too, I dont really mind the look though.

The first game with them is tomorrow night - I'll take lots of pics then and post them shortly after.
Basically, they all have a deep vibrant colour on the edges. The $5s, $100s and $1000s seemed to improve the most dramatically. The $25s are the only ones that didn't look a great deal better.
Stay tuned.
