pokerchips.com/ASM chip durability question

Posted Tue Jan 25, 2005 5:16 am GMT by Son of Dad
Greetings,

I recently recieved some sample chips from pokerchips.com and have written up an order for a custom set but have some concerns regarding chip durability. I was fidgeting with two chips in my hand at chest level (approx 5 feet or so from the ground) and accidently dropped on of the chips onto my ceramic tile floor. Surprisingly to me the chip broke into two seperate pieces. Seeing this as strange, and naturally curious, I decided to drop the other chip from the same height to see what might happen. Well, the same thing happened......the chip broke in half. My question is this: would this be considered a normal occurence for ASM clay chips? I am unsure if the sample chips they mail out are of secondary quality to those that they will custom manufacture and perhaps this was a contributing factor. Has anybody else experienced anything similar to this? I worry that when I ask ASM about it they will claim it is abnormal, when in fact it is to be expected when dropping chips(so they don't lose the sale).

Thanks in advance for any help.

I feel I should also mention that I was not throwing the chips in any way, simply dropping them from my hand.

Thanks again.

I did a durability test with one of the pokerchip.com chips about 4-5 months ago. I ended up having to throw the chip HARD at my tile floor to cause the chip to break. Just dropping did very little, if any damage.

I've got quite a few more of their chips, so I run the test again this evening.

Cheers,

Only thing I might add is this...

Brand new clay chips might be more susceptible to breaking, right out of the mold. I've dropped some new ones (ASM and Blue Chip) and never had them break, but my guess is that they could be slightly more fragile right after manufacture.

In my experience, however, once they are broken in a little, either by hand use or by oiling them, the clay tends to harden up a lot and become very durable.

I'll be interested to see John's review.

This has been really interesting.

All the following chips were dropped from a height of 4 feet onto the same single tile on my tile floor.

First up - Standard 3 spoted ASM/PC.com chip: Drops 1-4 produce visible damage on chip edge. Drop 7 the chip breaks in half.

2nd - Nevada Jack's Nevada chip (Blue Chip): After 12 drops no visible damage to the chip.

3rd - Palmas Club ASM chip (w/ insert): Drops 1-3 produce edge damage to the chip. Drop 4 causes one of the inserts to fall out. Drop 7 the chip breaks in half.

4th - Grand Island (Blue Chip): After 11 drops no visible damage.

5th - Paulson Home (Paulson): After 14 drops on, very small, visible nick on the edge.

Hummmmmm...food for thought. Think I'll be adjusting the 'quality' rating on the ASM chips....

Cheers,
John

Looks like I found the right spot.

I recieved some samples from PC.com.

Before I even read this post, I was tooling around with them and tested the durability of the horsehead "eagle" design chip.

I snapped the chip in half without trying very hard at all, with my hands, and then the decals came right off as well, attatched only by what looks like a dab of super glue. I wasn't even trying to do this. It just happened like the "all in" chips in Johns review.
I was going ask about this, but I found this thread instead.
However, to PC.com's credit, the roman mold with no inlay is seemingly indestructable, and I think I would break my fingers before I broke one of these.

Thanks for all the help and input fellas. For the record, the chips that I broke were the circle-square mold. Interesting thing about the roman mold, as that was the mold I wanted to (and still might) order.

Also I did get a reply from ASM and the sales rep told me that it in fact was NOT unusual for the chips to break in the situation I described. Points to them for not trying to play the cover up game. Now I just have to get off the fence and decide if I am going to place my order or not.

Good that they owned up to it!

So if someone has a $500 chip (cash game) and breaks it by dropping it on the floor, they can't cash it in right? Laughing

Maybe that's why casinos have carpets. Too many broken chips...

have you tried to do this with a custom PC chip? I think that there may be a different mold for the custom chips they do.

No, in fact this was one of the things I was curious about. Have you had any durability problems with your custom set Teekan?
