What to do?

I have played poker with friends on and off for years, mostly dealers choice. Like many others I have watched the WSOP on tv and have become interested in texas holdem. I have been lurking on this site for a while now and have been playing for play money. This crazy way to play holdem is getting old in a hurry and I would like to take the next step and start to play some low limit holdem on line. I do not expect to make money doing this but I would like to be competitive at least. I have purchased Brunson's Super System and Sklansky's The theory of Poker. Just wondering which book I should read first and if I should read them both before playing for real money. Also wondering where is the best place to start playing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Jim

Eyemin -

Welcome to the forums!

I haven't read Super/System, but I have heard good things about it. My personal experience is that Theory of Poker is also a good book. However, I would NOT recommend it as a good first book - there are advanced concepts in there that only realy make sense after you have played awhile (if then). Based on what I have heard, I would put Super/System in the same category.

My recommendation for a good first book would be Lee Jones' "Winning Low Limit Hold'em" . There is a lot of solid advice in there that doesn't overwealm you with complexity, and will provide you with a good foundation for learning about poker. You can then graduate to the other books after getting a lot of hands worth of experience.

Unfortunately I have already purchased the above mentioned two books and I will be reading one of these. I am not new to poker just fairly new to texas holdem. I guess for now I will read the Super System book and maybe I will start playing for very small stakes online. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My advice would be to start playing and try to improve by yourself from experience. Those books will not be as useful for very low stakes poker because you are playing vs players who do not know how to play well. The winning style to play at those stakes for you right now is tight but agressive with strong hands. People usually wont fold any flush or straightdraws at those stakes so that is where you will make your most money. Make potsized bets against flushdraws when you have top pair good kicker and only 3 or 4 people in.

If you are interested in a system tailored to winning at low stakes you may want to check out my site.

Start playing for real money, play for only money you are willing to lose (because you probably will lose at first). Just play tight honest poker and you'll learn a lot before you lose too much. I lost $500 (most of this was caused by my not learning from my mistakes) or so when I started. That $500 was an excellent investment for me, I'm now +$1000, and consistantly make money. If you're serious about learning how to play you'll do fine. If you play for real money it will bemuch easier to understand what you're reading.

The problem with Supersystem (and it is my favorite) is that Doyle is really a no limit player, although he does have some good advice for limit.
