My goal is always to win in NL Hold'em but over the weekend I finished 3rd in a tourney and was more satisfied than any 1st place I ever won. Why? I rarely got any playable cards and I was still able to get 3rd out of 20+ people.
I doubled my money but that wasn't even important Saturday night. In the past, when the cards sucked I was out early. This night, after folding like the first 15-20 hands with 2-9, 10-5, J-3, Q-5, I realized I would have to do something. I bluffed at the right times and when I did get a couple of cards I was able to get the maximum chips. I never felt in any panic but also never got a realy big stack.
Finally we were down to 3. I was really short stacked now. Like, only two or three Blinds left. And then I screwed up. I was the BB and limped in with my 9-6o. The flop came up Q93 rainbow. I was first to act. I had a pair of 9. Even though 9's didn't fill me with the greatest of confidence, I went all-in. The chip leader to my left goes all-in the next guy calls.
Both the chip leader and the other guy (my brother actually) both had 2 pair. My Brother had 9-3 and the other guy had Q-3. Crazy! The chip leader won.
The thing that sucked is if I would have just folded, I would have got second!
Oh well!
But I'm still very happy with my play. I think I moved to the next level.
