Clay or Ceramic

Posted Sat Jan 29, 2005 3:29 pm GMT by Pokerfarian
Thanks in advance for the help,

I will be buying a set of 800 to 1,000 chips with a custom designed logo for my group, replacing our bland "Old Gen" chips.

The avitar image will be the chip face.

I have narrowed my search either the pokerchips.com clay chips or the Chipco ceramics, from either Nevada Jacks, homepokerchips, or The Chip Store.

There are 2 important issues

1) Since we usually order dinner after we start playing, the ability to clean the chips periodically is important. Which chip will be better suited.

2) We play in an unused attic space of a building I own. It is only heated or cooled 1 day per week. I would bet the temp drops to 50 in the winter and climbs past 100 in the summer. Will this be an issue with either chip.

Thanks
Bob

I think that both your issues point to ceramic chips being your best bet vs. clay. (Even though I like clay chips better than ceramics.) Temperature extremes can hurt clays more, though ceramics certainly won't do well at freezing temps. And ceramics are much easier to clean, IMO.

Plus, you can get better custom graphics on a ceramic chip.

Good luck!

Hi Bob,
I went with ceramics b/c of the bigger canvas Wink also due to the wait at PC being ridiculously long. If you prefer clay, can deal with the wait, deal with single color edge spots, small inlay then definitely PC... it's even a cheaper route :D ! Looking at ~$1/chip to your door.

Depending on the complexity of your graphics could determine whether to got directly thru Chipco or not. More than likely homepokerchips.com will be your best bet and I highly recommend them. You're looking at ~$1.32/chip for 775 & ~$1.20/chip for 1000 for a 5 chip set to your door.

The Chip Store has gotten some bad reviews so I might do some research if your considering them as a cheaper altenative... they limit you on the graphics as they change on the wraps for each chip. Look for Johnny5's posts on 2+2 a couple months ago.

Don't know much about the temp changes harming clay chips but I wouldn't be surprised.

Check out pokerchipreviews.com for some more info. if you haven't already. Also, see what pokerchips.com has to say about the temp changes... I think they're usually pretty straight forward with their answers.

Good luck,
Fins

#1: Have you ordered samples of the chips? If not...do so.
#2: Regarding temp - if you store your chips in the 'regular' part of your house that is tempurature controlled, I don't believe temp will be an issue for you.
#3: Having handled both PC.com chips and ChipCo style chips for hundreds of hours each, I find that the PC.com chips are easier to 'clean up'.

Best of luck!!
Cheers,
John

I carry a few of my business cards, which happen to be Chipco chips,
in my pockets at all times. Last night my GF washed my jeans without
checking my pockets (she must have been tired, as the rule around here
is if it makes the laundry basket it's fair game) for cash or my wallet.
She washed the chips and they came out stellar. Clean, not faded, and
looking no worse for wear. No I am not endorsing this method of cleaning
just providing a little information on Chipco's durability.
