Limit: Folding top pair on the flop.

In limit, do you ever fold top pair on the flop to a single bet?

I never do. Are there situations where I should?

It all depends. I have, because I believed I was beat.

It depends on the player, your chip stack, position, and what cards you're holding.

Situation A:
Healthy chipstack, against a player who you believe is loose aggressive
Your hand: 9 Spade A Diamond

Flop: 3 Club 10 Diamond A Heart

The obvious decision here is call. Then after the turn, check and allow him to bet, and raise as its limit and now the big bets are in play. Don't waste revealing the strength of your hand until the turn.

Situation B:
Somewhat shortstacked, against a player who you believe is very tight
Your hand: J Spade 2 Club

Flop: J Heart 9 Heart 10 Heart

I would probably fold. Then again I wouldn't call with J2o to begin with, so I wouldn't necessarily be in that position

Situation C:
Healthy chipstack, against an unknown player
Your hand: A Spade 2 Spade

Flop: A Heart 3 Heart 7 Club

Although I would be slightly worried about your kicker, he might not have the ace to begin with. I would raise to establish the strength of his hand.

If you're thinking of folding top pair to a single bet you shouldn't have seen the flop to begin with. The only time I would consider it is if I was in the blind with Ax Kx etc...flopped top pair someone bet and there were several callers and I was VERY confident someone had me beat. A bad fold will cost you much more than a bad call.
