Heads Up

Posted Sun Jan 30, 2005 10:04 pm GMT by Far East
Okay, I've learned one thing about my NL Hold'em playing skill, and that is that it lacks in one on one situations. I can do a good job of making it to the final two, but once it gets to there I find myself losing more, and I'm pretty sure that it has something to do with how I'm playing.

So, could anyone share some tips that they have learned about the art of playing heads up, and how they effectively finish off their opponent.

Please Respond.

Be much more aggressive when you have the button than when you don't. If you're the chip leader, let your opponent push you a little. Because if he thinks he can push you, then there will come a time when he pushes you too hard, and falls into your trap meaning elimination for him.

If you're the shorter stack, chip away at him. Don't try to take everything in one pot (if you do, great). Be aggressive on the button, and if he's a calling station, make more value bets than non-value bets.

Basically, play your opponent. If he's unbluffable-- don't bluff him and just make value bets. If he's a rock, bluff him and value bet your monsters.

You have to get maximal value for your good hands though.

When you are the big blind, make a token raise. Don't let the other player in for half a blind. If he doesn't raise when you're the small blind, call with almost anything and see what flops, until he learns that lesson.

you have to be agressive. you cannot be passive and win heads up situations unless the cards are going your way. when you are on the button you can raise with an decent hand. hands such as K6s, Q10o, 98s, A7o, etc. hands where you wouldn't usually raise in a full table now become playable heads up. raise hard with an PP or Ace high because it is usually good preflop. of course it all depends on the opponent but this is a generalization.
