High Roller

Just watched it tonight on STARZ and it was pretty good. There were a few flaws in the film however. When Stu is interviewed by ESPN after winning the 1981 WSOP, they preface him by saying he is the first person to repeat back-to-back wins since Johnny Moss. How the hell do you make a poker movie and forget about Doyle Brunson? After Moss, Brunson went back-to-back in 1976 and 1977. Also, it showed Ungar supposedly in 1989 driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima. Granted most people would never notice this, but I'm a car guy and hate seeing wrong period cars in film.

Flaws aside, the movie was very entertaining and Michael Imperioli is a great actor. Too bad he isn't on Tilt rather than the cast of overacting talent they have.

I thought that it sucked.........

Stu Unger was a demon of a poker player.

The movie would have been good had it showed MORE poker...afterall, that is how he made his name.....

They also showed NONE of the stories that were out there about Stuey.

They didn't show the banter and trash talking that Stuey and Doyle did when Stu won his first bracelet.

The legend goes that Doyle was grossly outplayed and Stuey was showing all of his bluffs.

How can the movie be any good when they showed NONE of this?

you made alot of good points I thought as well that thought would be in the movie but weren't. There wasn't alot of poker in the movie at all though, and he was pretty heavily into the drugs at one time and I thought it was a little on the light factor for that and the poker shots.

It will be out on DVD this Tuesday. There will be the regular DVD, and a collector's edition, 2-DVD set.

Can't wait... I'm not anticipating a great movie, just like I did for "Shade", and I kind of liked it...

Watched it tonight... wasn't that bad, wasn't bad at all!!

The part where Stu calls Morita's hand was just great!!! Just as good as when Matt Damon called everyone's hands at the judges game...

I will have to say Shade was the WORST movie I have ever seen. I would rather Watch Legally Blonde 1 and 2 twelve times each than have to endure one more minute of the movie Shade.

Oh, bull. You either don't watch many movies or you have bizzare standards.

Have you ever seen "You got served" or "Starship troopers 2" or "Catwoman" or . . . I can't go on.

Shade was a cute little movie. It was a 2 out of 5 but it wasn't even CLOSE to the worst movie I've ever seen. That would be Conquest, a spagetti Conan knockoff to excerable to sit through even for substantial purient nudity.

Allow me.

Undoubtedly, the worst movie ever made. It passes through the "so bad it's good" barrier back to bad again.

No, I discount things that manage to make it into the "camp" pile, like say, Killer Clowns from Outer Space, or any given Troma dropping. It's movies that THINK they are real movies...Like, OMG, HOUSE OF THE DEAD!

If you can take the pain, rent HOUSE OF THE DEAD on DVD and watch it with commentary on. THOSE PEOPLE THOUGHT THEY WERE MAKING ART.

They seriously LIKED their output and seem unaware it's one of the worst movies ever. . . .or, or . . .TORQUE, a movie that a friend of mine summed up as "what you'd get if you gave a 9 year old 40 million dollars to make a movie".

Finally saw "High Roller" last night. I didn't think it was that bad, but neither was it good. The least they could've done is give "Stuey" a messed up nose towards the end. He looked like Skeletor, for crying out loud!!

I wish it would've included a little more poker though. Now that I think about it, I think Lou Diamond-Phillips would've been a better choice.

I liked Shade (even own it). It wasn't the best movie but with so few poker movies it's easily a top 10 poker movie of all time (I can only think of 3 or 4, period)!

As for a terrible movie, the only movie I ever walked out of was "Out of Africa". What a boring movie. It got all kinds of critical accolades and I thought it stunk.
