Tournament in Vegas

Posted Mon Jan 31, 2005 12:05 pm GMT by Mears352
Just got back from Vegas and played in one tournament while I was there. Very well structured tournament, as I would have expected. It was a $25 buy in 83 player max. The first hour was Limit and the rest of the tournament was NL. We all started off with 300 TC. I ended up surviving the first hour and once it went to NL I was getting great hands with lots of callers. One hand I knocked two people with AK which brought us to the final table. (I was the chip leader at this point)
I think I made a mistake at the final table that cost me. Guy to my right goes all in, I look down to find AJs and pondered for a couple of minutes. I ended up folding as at the time I was not wanting to risk 1/3 of my chips. I put him on a PP and figured it would have been a race.
He ended up having poket 7's and beat another player to kock him out. I would have caught my flush on the turn had I called his all in bet.
Do you guys think I made the right move here, not calling his all in bet with AJs? It would have cost me 1/3 of my chips had I lost and the blinds were getting pretty large at 500 1000.
I ended up finishing 4th for a small payout but I had a blast playing in it.

I also visited some of the poker rooms and I loved the Mirage poker room. It was huge and you never had to wait a long time to get a seat. i played for three hours before I had to catch my flight on Saturday night and ended up $150 playing 3-6.
All in all it was a fun trip and had a blast. There is a newspaper in most casinos that will have a list of daily tournaments. Grab that and remember to register atleast an hour and a half prior to the start of the tourney. We didn't make two tournaments because they maxed out.

I dont think it was a bad move.

IMO folding when you feel a hand is no good is MUCH better than calling when you feel its no good.

Just cuz you would have caught the flush, doesnt mean you shouldnt lay it down.

Follow your instincts more, learn to trust them and you will get better and better.

Congratulations!
I experienced pretty much the same thing you went through last time I was out there in November. I played 4 NL tourneys and made two final tables to walk away with a decent payout. I had a few suckouts as well, but I had a blast and feel like I learned a lot. Mirage is a nice room. The last tournament I played was a $110 buyin at Binions and it was such an amazing feeling to be playing in the same room as the WSOP and see the Wall of Champions.

Yea, we walked into Binions and it was such an awesome feeling to see the poker room and to be able to see all the past winners on the wall.

No i don't think you could have played AJ in that situation really, there would be situations where you could, but AJ is so weak it's hard to call a big bet with it.
