Antique Ivory Poker Chip SET

Posted Tue Feb 01, 2005 12:45 am GMT by fluffycat
I have recently acquired a complete set of antique ivory poker chips. Three-hundred (300) of them in a walnut(?) carrier which fits inside a matching hinged box along with two decks of monogrammed cards. I've read that they stopped making these in 1875. All 300 are hand-etched. There are flowered ones, fives which have red stained rims, and twenty-fives which used to have either green or tan stained rims. After searching for hours on the internet, I have not come across even one *set* of antique ivory chips. Does anyone know of any serious collectors or poker players that might be interested in this set? I have included a photo of just 3 of the chips. I can provide more photos. http://home.capecod.net/~jce/pokerchips/pokerchips.JPG

The folks over at thechipboard.com will likely be able to tell you some history on those interesting chips. I imagine somebody over would also know what they are worth to a collector.

Here is a link to the ivory chips that TRKing sells. They arent the same chip but man are they expensive. $3 a chip. This is just to give you an idea of how expensive these type of chips are going for.

NICKMAST: Thanks for the link but I see that those on TRKing are reproductions! "Period Ivory Chip Facsimile" at $3.00 each. WoW! Looks like Ebay might be the way to go. I can't believe how much they are getting for single chips... and I have 300 of them!!!!!!!! Looks like I've got a small fortune here! Yahoo!!!!!!

You've probably already seen this but, here is a link for a site that has many chips like yours. The prices are substantially more than the $3 your were talking about. Anyway it should give you some idea to the value.

If your chips are the real deal, then wow! You could make a TON of money selling those. Of course, they may rise in value as more collectors come about during this little poker fad which probably won't die out any time soon.

Looks like you are sitting on a pot of gold. Get them valued and insured and hang on to them.

You can try eBay but I would spend some money and advertise it a bit. Maybe get a banner on a site, put a small add in a magazine, etc. Then, set a date to start the auction, say April 15th. I would also get them authenticated by an expert. Assuming the above, you might get $10K+. If you just throw them up on ebay, more like $2500 to $3500 and they will most likelt be re-sold for 3 times that.

Shocked Oh boy!! I've checked my email and there is more than a page full of replies... about 32 of them!! Every one of them is interested in the ivory set. Some sound more serioius than others. I will personally email you all back just incase your not watching this discussion.

Arrow Not sure which route to take at this moment but give me a day to figure this out. (I have a full time job which I still need to tend to Rolling Eyes )
Any suggestions will be welcome and appreciated. In the meantime, here are a bunch of photos of the set for you all to drool over!

If you need the money, sell them on eBay. If not, I would just keep it for a while. The value of those would only increase not decrease.

Dude, take those to the antique roadshow! You will be one of those guys where they think its worth a couple grand and he says, "its worth a quarter mil or some crap." Then you fall over and wig out. :p

I'd actually put those in a proper auction once you had them valued. Only go to Ebay if you can't move them in an auction.

They certainly are a nice set, even worth a bit more if you can find some history on them.

I'll give you 50 bucks! :D

If I were you I would try to hold on to those bad boys for awhile longer. Like someone mentioned, they are only going to get more and more expensive. I would also take to an expert and I don't think I would use ebay for the auction.

Good luck.

Have you considered having the set appraised by some local antique appraisers? (use more than one appraiser, in case you're getting a low-ball estimate from someone trying to steal them.) If you're in a larger city you may also have estate auctioneers who could give you an appraisal on their worth as well. It won't be free, but well worth the money if it turns out to be something of significant value.

Hello all, Following is a copy of the email I have sent to all who have emailed me about my ivory set...

There has been an overwhelming amount of interest in this set. I have decided to take offers because I feel there is enough interest from this discussion board/forum and feel the offers will be fair and appropriate to the true value of this set. Thank you all for your advice and interest. If you are seriously interested, please contact me with your offer. I have included many photos below. Warmest regards, Jennifer in Mass.

For anyone who's interested, I had a friend list the chips last night on Ebay for a 10 day auction. Here's a direct link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=63760&item=6152572474
