Nexgens vs 11.5 gram suited

Posted Wed Feb 02, 2005 11:27 am GMT by User
OK,

I've got 11.5 gram metal slug plastic suited chips right now and I've been hearing preaty good things about the nexgens that are now on the market. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me the difference between these two kinds of chips (if any) as I really like the look of the nexgens and especially the custom sticker ones some of you have been posting. I'm just wondering what these chips are like as I've been having trouble finding samples of these chips that can be easily sent to Canada so I can compare to 11.5 gram plastics. Anyways, any would be great, thanks

I have a sample of the Nexgen chips. They are pretty nice. Two of my buddies liked em so much they ordered full sets. The best part about them is the custom labels you can put on. If youre on a budget, the NExgens are the way to go in my opinion. They feel ALOT nicer than the regular 11.5 gram chips. I didnt notice how bad the old 11.5 chips were until I handled them after handling the Nexgens for a while. The Nexgens dont sound "coinish". You can barely notice that there is a metal piece inside of them. They feel alot nicer, alot smoother, like a clay chip. When I first got the sample, I didnt like them. They were rough around the edges and not very smooth. I played with them for a short while and they broke in really nicely. While I would still prefer real clay or ChipCo chips, if you cant drop that kind of money on poker chips, definately go with the NexGens.

I have 1000 nexgens with custom labels and there is no comparison to 11.5 metal slug chips. The feel and sound is much better on the nexgens. however, you can definately hear a metal sound its just not as metallic of a ring as 11.5's. compared to any clay chip, the sound downright sucks on both of these chips but for the money they are great. Right now at 5star the price is a steal compared to any other vendor. so get the nexgens.

Thanks for the replies,

I'm impressed with all the positive responses for these nexgen chips. Wondering also if anyone knows of a vendor who would send samples of the nexgens cheap to Canada; Five Star Deal wants to charge $18 bucks shipping to Canada!

for those of you that have the NexGen chips... can you fit 20 per row in a rack? i know that my current dice chips don't always fit (specifically, i can only fit 19 of the white ones per row). i have a few samples of the NexGen chips but not enough to know whether they will fit correctly or not.

thanks
josh

they fit perfectly.

As with everything else coming out of China the tolerences on the racks can vary depending upon which sweat shop they came out of and whose design they copied this week, though both the RPT and the Las Vegas Nexgens seem to fit very well in the racks sold by Trademark/5stardeal which are 69mm wide. If you have a set of calipers or a micrometer, you should find that those Nexgens are just a bit under 3.4 mm thick.

btw who makes the nexgens?

Some sweat shop in China that exploits their workers.
Then they're imported into the US where the importer may mark it up as much as 20 times. Carpe Diem

rocket, was meaning a direct manufacturer link and not a semi-sarcastic response Twisted Evil

Why don't you contact Trademark and ask them. I think they're the importer.

I just received my sample from 5stardeal of NexGen 8000 Series chips and I must say that I’m very disappointed in them.

The mfg quality is excellent, the sound and feel are both good and they look great, but the plastic these are made of was a poor choice.

These chips have a very small crosshatched pattern in the mold that creates a pretty significant texture around the outer edge of the face of the chip. This can easily be seen in the chip photos at 5stardeal. I was expecting this to be a good thing because I thought I would give them a better feel. What I did not expect was that the plastic would be so soft and of such low quality that it would craze and turn color.

When you rub one chip against another the plastic sluffs off and turns to a much light color. For example; I rubbed the blue chips against each other with very modest pressure and the result was a significant amount of light blue scuffing on the face of both chips. This, to me, is a major issue since the chips will be stored in a carrier where they will rub against each other all the times.

I also think that during normal play they will not wear well as their propensity for scuffing will quicly reduced the visual appeal of the chip.

I’m still searching for a good chip with a recessed center for custom labeling. Any other choices other than the hard plastic junk? I think I’m leaning towards the Casino Pro Clays but they are way heavy and I would like a chip that is closer to 10g in weight than 13g.

Take a look at the Series 2 version of this set of chips. Your experience may have just answered my question as to why it appears that the texture on these chips appear to have been removed. If you're looking for a lighter chip, you might want to contact Blue Chip in Las Vegas. Their home chips have a recessed area a little over an inch in diameter and will take a label nicely. And you don't have to worry about feel, since these are real casino quality chips. The home chips are in about the 8.3-8.5gr neighborhood. 5 Star still has some solid color ones in their specials page, but only in red and white.

I wasn't overwhelmed with the quality of the Blue Chip ones I handled. But I'm still pretty new and sometimes don't even know what I like until I've played with it a bit.

They're going to feel light to a lot of people and they might not like them. But at $.36 apiece, I figured it was a good price to give them a try. Other than feeling light, they aren't that bad and I like the recess that they have for the label, though you'll never get it perfectly centered.
