Hi all,
I've been a fan of texas hold'em since mid summer, and play it weekly with some friends. We just play for fun, since we're 16. When we first started it was the nickel and dime bets, but we've come a long way since then. I would consider myself a decent player, but nothing more. When i win its not a lot, but when I lose, I pretty much get cleaned out. I'll give you some more information and hopefully you guys can help.
Say I start with $20 in chips. I'll go up to $30 ... maintain for a while ... then there is always some big hand i get carried away in and end up going to $10 ... Then either call all in and win some money, or get called on it and lose it. Pretty much I normally go up a good amount. Then I think I let my guard down, and usually end up losing, often by the smallest margin. Sometimes I will play hands really well, and others not so well here is an example.
I have A Q and before the flop the opponent raises 5, (trying to buy the blinds) and I call.
Flop : 10 4 7
I didn't think he would have raised it big if he had one of these cards. I raised another 5. He called. Now i'm gettin a little nervous
Turn : 3
I make another $5 raise, and he's stickin in
River : 7
Here's where I think i went wrong. I checked! thinking back i wonder what i was doing. He was stunned, and very worried and must of thought about it for 5 minutes. He called.
He had A K !!! His king kicker beat my queen kicker! One of my friends thought that the check was a good play, and the other thought opposite.
I was shakin in my boots, I went from 40 - 20. I dont know how to change this. I mean i can't win a big hand and then fold everything else afterwards. I am an all around player, I mix it up by bluffing and going in on good hands, So if you guys could give some tips, on what hands to go in on, tips on reading other players etc. it would help alot.
Thanks for any comments

Lay it down, man. You had A-high! We know he had AK now, and probably shouldn't have called you. But you have to consider the chances that he has a pocket pair. In general if you wiff the flop and face bet of any significance with respect to the pot fold (I know that doesn't pertain to this hand). I know it's hard to fold a hand as pretty as A Qs, but when you wiff the flop you have to. Also, your friend appears to be a bit of an unbluffable call station. So don't try to bluff this guy. Wait 'til you get and hand and make him pay for his sloppy play.

Thanks,
Yeah, maybe I just need to 'swallow my pride' and fold em. The reason i stayed in was because he bet big pre-flop, leading me to believe he has a high pair? Yeah stupid move by me, won't happen again. Although, if i had of bet big after the river, i wonder if i could have taken it!
THanks for any other commmetns or replies

playing this hand out of position is very easy. . .you miss you fold.
But if you want to outplay him here and your read is overcards AND NOT OVERPAIR, do a stop and go. Remember, if he's holding a premium pair, that flop just made his hand much stronger.
Check/call the flop this is the stop, lead the turn this is the go and try to pick up more tells.
Still comfortable with your read? Still feel like he'll make a fold? Did he look uncomfortable making that call on the turn? Hammer the river with conviction.
But still, fold this on the flop. . . .

BTW, please don't fold this preflop.
