curious if anyone was flirting with the idea of a group buy for the new paulsons coming out soon...

I was wondering the same thing. Check this thread:

There was mention of it, but it didn't come to anything.

I'd be interested in a Paulson group buy if anyone had more information on availibility and pricing.
Posted Sun Feb 06, 2005 3:39 pm GMT by duma
i would be up for a group buy so long as the price will be significantly cheaper than 5stardeal and their 25%off discount. im looking for a $300 chip set

Personally,
I'm sick of waiting, the hype, the speculation, and the postponed shipping dates.
Although I may regret it after the Paulson's do come out, I'm shopping elsewhere for now.
I think the market will see different prices and styles after Paulson starts working with the vendors, so waiting may not be a bad move.
Posted Sun Feb 06, 2005 7:05 pm GMT by trogdoraoeu
Hmmm, waiting would likely be prudent but I don't know if I can restrain myself:)
Is it just me or does anyone else wonder about the disparity between the graphic and the photo, regarding the shape?

The sticker is a lot larger in the photo. I suppose the final chips may have smaller stickers (so as to look more like the graphic), but then you'd see a blank space between where the inlay begins and the sticker starts. I'm guessing the mold isn't going to change. Also, "PAULSON CHIPS" is closer to the edge in the photo.

I have really been torn between these new Paulson’s and just ordering some customs from pc.com. There are significant drawbacks to both. I would like to think that after a bit of time there might be another mold option from Paulson but given all the current delays its unreasonable to wait and see. I agree completely that there is a gap between the reality of the pictures and the graphic; that makes the decision more difficult. As for the placement of the inlay or the area between "Paulson chips" and the edge I would go off the pictures not the graphic. However, the colors of the graphic are pretty much right on. I have seen other Paulson’s using the same color scheme and they were virtually identical. I am really disappointed in the "James Bond" inlay more than anything. Its ok, but between Blue Chips version saturating the market and the original Paulson’s, it’s been over done and it never really was too impressive anyway. All this would be simple if ASM's offered multi color edge spots and weren’t so brittle.

I agree with most of that, especially the "james bond" oversaturation.
I feel that I can't do wrong going with a TR KING custom, which is what I am doing: going "old school"

I seriously looked at the TR Kings. With out a doubt they are one of the best chips out there IMHO. The weight and durability is outstanding, at least the samples that I have are. The negatives for the them are that I don't like anything about their edge spots, they have pore shape and their small. The whole chip is really slick too, however, the coating that causes the slickness is one reason they're so durable. Anyway, I could never fault someone for buying them but I just decided feel was one of the most important aspects for me and that ruled them out.

The TR kings do sound pretty nice. I'm really digging the edge spots / colors on the new paulsons though. I also really like the James Bond inlay, although it seems I'm in the minority there. The "oversaturation" may be a good point, regarding whether they'll tend hold their value. I bet Paulson went with them partially to get back some of the market share the blue chip bonds has. They seem to be perpetually out of stock at 5stardeal.com (the blue chip bonds). I just called 5stardeal and they said something about them being discontinued. Maybe that will improve the saturation situation.

The other option for you might be the Paulson's at trademarkpoker.com. They are identical except for the inlay. Personally I like tradmarks better but I may be in the minority on that. Anyway, there is another hang up with them and that is they wont have any available until March 11th. Again, not to take away from dice702 -- I think they are great to deal with.
IMO the reason for the new chips having the "james bond" inlay is simply because its a "tried and true" look. It was a marketing choice. The projected future value of any given chip, I would say, is marginal. There is plenty of gas left in this new poker trend but unquestionably it is a trend -- eventually it will die and there will be land fills of epic proportions filled will plastic chips. As for the clays and what not, they will be left for those few enthusiasts and compulsive gamblers. On the other hand there has pretty much always been a small market in vintage poker chips...
that's my 1.5 cents worth.

You're probably right -- so much for me psyching myself into looking at this as an "investment" .
That makes me want to go back to my original plan, which was to have a friend who is going to Vegas get me about 500 $1 chips from several different Casinos. I could just pretend the Mirage $1's are worth $25, and the Caesar's Palace $1's are worthe $100, etc. I've heard casinos don't care if you walk out with their chips. I'm thinking with this strategy, they could eventually be worth something. Has anyone ever done this / thought about doing this?

I would be in for a group buy when the information is final. I was wondering if this group buy gets going, would there be two different groupings since there are two different inlays right now? I still haven't decided which I like, but I am kinda leaning toward the trademark.com style. Of course, that could change depending on the time of day, lol. Someone had mentioned in one of the other posts about possibly getting a deal on these. I think it was Nugzy that mentioned it. This would be an awesome group-buy even if we can get the deal from 5*deal.com for their particular inlay.

I've been informed that the final mold is different -- closer to the graphic than the photo.

Just a heads up....dice702 has their order page up again for these. They are shipping the pre-orders out on the 18th I think for anyone who ordered them sight unseen.

Anyone know if the $100 is going to be a true black base color, or if it's the hideous "charcoal" base color?

well according to the diagram the inaly is a Standard 7/8" inlay. when looking at the Paulson catalog on GPI gaming website, it shows that the sample pic "Paulson Chips" chip shown uses a Grand inlay that is 1 1/16"
so i do not believe that these chips will look like the demos/samples. they will look like the original Bonds chips that paulson put out last time, albeit without those 2 rings around the tophats

Speaking of the GPI/Paulson catalog, it mentions 3 sizes for chips, the smallest of which (39mm) is the size of the Paulson homes. Are most casino chips 39mm? Are any 43mm or 48mm?

All of the casino chips that I have in my collection are 39mm. They are almost all Paulson's.

I think casino baccarat chips are oversized - 43mm.

Well they look pretty good. I dont understand why the inlay is so small but I guess I will have to get used to it... I bought 500.. -shrug-grin-
Posted Wed Feb 16, 2005 7:43 pm GMT by Mr. Meaner
I like them but I think the inlay would look better if they reached to the egde and filled in the circle area.

It really would have been nice if they had a larger outer mold that met the sticker like the old bond chips.
anyway 300 are on the way

Yeah, I am some what disappointed simply because it’s not what the samples looked like and that’s what I was expecting. A few times I've looked at them and I liked them and a few times it just didn’t look right so we'll see when they get here. Based on what people are saying in the other paulson thread they are already very unpopular.
Posted Thu Feb 17, 2005 12:30 am GMT by vai777
yeah I dont know what happened.
Maybee there was a miss comunication between paulson and the retailers of the new chips I just cant see anyone knowingly orderin a 7/8 inlay when they are reciving chips molded for a grand inlay.
It just dosent make any sense but for the price and the colors I figured what the hell Im not paying $2 a chips on ebay thats insane.

Seriously! I've got to say that anyone who is willing to pay that much either A) Has so much disposable money that it doesn’t matter. Or B) Are totally F-ed up. The -only- reason they are at those prices is because poker is so trendy right now. It’s a perfect example of how shallow people can be. I would venture to say that over 95% of the chips bought like that will be in a box in the attic collecting dust in a couple years... too bad really.
Thats enough ranting...

True after a certaint point enough is enough I mean are the crystal park casino chips really worth $3-$4 a chip that is insane.

sorry but imma have to retract my statements about wanting in on a group buy. these are FUGLY! maybe when paulson cleans up their act and actually puts some thought into their home marker chips i will reconsider.

So, does anyone know if the trademark.com version is gonna have this same issue with the inlay? I can't believe how ridiculous these look with that mismatched-sized inlay. I like the colors, but I can't get over the inlay.
Posted Thu Feb 17, 2005 12:03 pm GMT by TGuns
I can't even find anything about them on Trademark. I thought at one point they had a preview page up or something, maybe they pulled out after seeing the finals? ha ha.

The mock-ups Look a lot better than the grand-inlay-mold.
Posted Thu Feb 17, 2005 12:18 pm GMT by Deakon
Is this the preview page you are refering to? They show the inlay fitting better, but I am not sure if this preview is rendered exactly as it will look. The picture makes it hard to tell where the inlay begins and where the inlay image begins. I think PaulsonChips(Ace) mentioned he has a sample from these guys.

Yeah, thanks. That was the preview page I saw before. Those are obviously renders - I like the way they look (or are supposed to look) better than the real photos from dice702 with James Bond inlay. I'm gonna wait and see if the Trademarkpoker Paulsons end up being the same exact as dice702 or not. Either way, I'm just gonna keep collecting samples until I really find the chips I want to take home...
Posted Thu Feb 17, 2005 4:31 pm GMT by civiliste
I have a strong feeling that the Paulson's at Trademark will be the same as 702.
Paulson hasn't evidenced a great deal of interest in the home market thus far. Their refusal to offer customization of the color schemes and molds seems to indicate a lack of interest in providing the home market with a great deal of variety.
Furthermore, offering multiple styles to home players would result in higher costs. And I think it's unlikely that anything but the currently available style will be offered.

I was not real fond of the smaller inlay when I first looked at it but they are starting to grow on me the more I look at them. I have ordered some samples from Dice702. I will post some pictures when they arrive.
Posted Thu Feb 17, 2005 6:14 pm GMT by vai777
I like the small inlay I just wish the chips mold was the standard mold instaed of a grand inlay mold.
Posted Thu Feb 17, 2005 6:35 pm GMT by TGuns
honestly after looking at the pics over and over again, the only thing that I'm not a huge fan of is the "PAULSON CHIPS" emblazoned around the mold. I guess I just like the history and old-style look of the previous H&C mold better. I'm gonna grab some samples and see how they look in person before I bash the design anymore.
