Question about legality of hosting a Texas Holdem Tournement

Posted Sun Feb 06, 2005 7:23 am GMT by eojcod
We are considering hosting a Texas Holdem Tournement for charity at our Private club in Philadelphia Pa.

Here's our basic plan:

We want to promote the tournement to members and guests,
Then rent or buy the eqipment,

Then hire staff (in house and out of house dealers),

We then plan to charge $40 a ticket which goes to pay for the food , expenses, a one hour open bar cocktail hour and charity.

We plan to up to 60 people enter. All players would get for example 5000 points in chips that have no cash value

1st place overall gets a $500 cash Prize
2nd Place gets a $250 cash prize
3rd Place gets $100 cash prize

MY QUESTION is this legal? I know many area bars are doing this, but we are a high profile club and don't want to do anything that's not legal.

Where can I find out about the legality of this type of game?

Any advice is welcome

I'd call a local lawyer.

Poker laws vary from state to state. You can do some preliminary research here:

Ultimately, you will absolutely need to follow MasterShake's advice and get an opinion from a legal professional who knows your state and local laws in this area.

I highly doubt that it is legal, because you are in effect taking a rake.

It depends on state laws, but here charity poker tournaments are legal if %50 of the buy-ins goes to charity.

Call a lawyer

Or call your attorney general's office.

Make sure you stress that it's a private club. That can matter sometimes.

It really depends on a whole lot of things. In Illinois, the laws vary GREATLY when it is considered a Charity Gaming event. Call a lawyer, that's by far the best thing you could do here.
