I've only played for a couple of months, but both my worst bad beats has started with me having pocket pair.
A typical situation_
.25/.50 PL
10 players
I am dealt
 K  K. on the big blind.
On my turn a raise to $1.50, about 6 players call.
preflop
 J  8 9
Pot is $10
Don't want anyone to get a cheap draw for a straight, I go for a overbet and bet $10. Next player calls, other folds, but the dealer goes all in for $30.
Scared of the straight, but not willing to let go I call, next player also calls, pot is now about $80.
Turn comes 5 and then 10.
The other two players show 89o. They share the pot with 2 pairs. $40 each, I stare speechless.
I can't see if I should have played it differently. Perhaps a wiser player would have folded after the flop but ironically it was not a straight that won anyway.

play the mans game of no limit make any bastard pay for even going at it against u. Pocket pairs are weak in limit and pot limit unless u make a set or get only a few callers..
so basically what dave & tame said but im at work, bored out of my skull and have to spash my thoughts somewheres.
