Samples, samples everywhere and not a chip to clink! |

Gentlemen,
I am in the process of ordering a set of custom color logo chips (see avatar for logo). Money is not an issue, if I love the chips.
Always the smart consumer, I have about 70 sample chips on my desk.
Either I am way to particular, or I need help.
Homepokerchip.com Ceramics
First off, I was expecting a chip that had the properties I associate with ceramics-smooth, glossy, and cool to the touch. 2 of the guy that looked at them picked wood as the construction material when asked. Very good graphics was a saving point. Outstanding customer service so far was a double plus.
Nevada Jacks Desert Sands
Same as above, with the added problem of less than acceptable graphics. I literally mailed them a self addressed stamped envelope with cash to get a sample!
The Chip Store
Only took 1 threatening e-mail to find out why I still don't have my sample I paid for 18 days ago. Hoping that the chip will be different from the ones above, but since they are all chipco, I am sure I am dreaming.
pokerchips.com custom clay
As I have said in past posts, we eat dinner at the table and I want to be able to clean these chips; clay concerns me. The wait would be a drag, but not the end of the world. The chips are a little lighter than I would like, but you can't really knock these things unless you really want to try.
Paulsons
When I first started this process, I was enticed by the casinocom.com site; what happened there? Suddenly, they were gone!
No samples--I am annoyed that the size of the inlay for the ultra sweet "Vinyard" chip is not available to the public, at least as far as I can see. I have that nasty, "if you can do it for yourself, then why can't you do it for me" attitude that would make choosing these an emotionally unhappy choice.
If anyone can tell me good news here, I would like it.
Mr poker chip.com customs
I suppose by definition, they are poker chips, but the certainly look and feel like a childs collectable coin of some sort.
Nexgens
I figured in for a penny, in for a pound. I ordered 20 Nexgens from 5stardeal and had Brent make me 200 labels. I have seen some very nice chips done like this. By the way, Brent is "Mr Customer Service"!
The nexgens themselves are interesting. The pattern pressed into them says, "we are not trying to fool you into thinking this is a clay chip", but over all, nice feel. I am certain that the slick feel is the center where the insert will go. We shall see.
What else can I look at?
Funny thing about money not being an object--I also do not need to buy an expensive set to impress anyone, and I learned long ago that price and quality are not always directly related.
Thanks for any and all advice
Bob

You should check out TR King, They do custom chips with multi-colored edge spots. Very nice chips if you ask me.

First, ceramics:
Wait til you get your real Chipco samples and you'll see they are different from the Nevada Jacks type ceramics. Most people like the smoother Chipcos with sharp graphics, but the NJs (dead man, Desert Sands, Mardi Gras, etc.) are rougher and stack better.
Second, clay:
If you don't want clay, then skip to the end. But if you want clays, you might add the Kardwell (ASM Horsehead) chips to your samples (standard Casino Pro, or they will do custom work): http://www.kardwell.com/casino-pro-chips.htm
ASM will make customs for you (various molds): http://www.pokerchips.com/chips/chips_clay.html
Or look at the Nevada Jacks clay chips (not custom): http://www.nevadajacks.net/clay_poker_chips.htm
And lots of people like the TR King chips. You can look at threads in this forum about custom TR Kings, or check the Stock Casino Inlaid Chips at their site: http://www.trking.com/chip.html

www.holdempokerchips.com has the Grand Island Clays. I ordered a sample set of those today. One of the best looking Clays out there IMO. The only thing that concerns me about them is the light weight at 8.3 grams. I also ordered a sample set of the TRKing stock casino inlaid chips on Wednesday. Great looking chip, full 10 grams. The only thing that concerns me about those is the lack of detailed edgespots. If I love the weight and feel of the Grand Island, I'll go with those. If I don't, I'm gonna go with TRKing stock casino inlaid chips. Waiting for my samples to come to make my decision.
I have a sample set of the Chipco "suits" and the Chipco "classics". They have a great feel and great stackability. Great designs and graphics. The only thing I dont like about them is that they dont have that old school feel or look to them.
Like everyone told me, samples, samples, samples!!!!!!
Best of luck to you on your chip hunt!!!

What is the size of the TR King chips? 37mm? They are definately smaller than regular chips.

I'm not trying to offend you, but the stupid guesstimate is somewhat indicative of a kneejerk remark rather than a question. If they are "definitely smaller", it would seem to indicate that you have at least one or more TR King chips to compare against other chips. If you have the chip in hand, why don't you just measure it, instead of mouthing off some ridiculous number. If I recall, the TR King chips are something in the neighborhood of 38.4 or 38.6 mm. It's a hair smaller than many of the other casino grade chips, but most are larger that the 'standard' of 39mm as well. They're also a little thinner too at about 3.2mm each. I don't remember who it was, it may have been Slowplayray, but someone did make diameter and thickness measurements of a number of the casino grade chips a while back.

I'm not so feeble minded after all. Looks like I did remember the measurements.

It really is irrelevant, though. They are all close enough...as long as all the chips in front of you in a game are the same size...
