Best first book: "Winning Low Limit Hold'em" by Lee Jones. This gives very good advice without confusing you with lots of complex strategies + deep analysis.

Once you've read that, I would then get a lot of experience playing hands, then you can start reading some other books to get other opinions + more advanced strategies. From personal experience, I can recommend:
"Hold'em Poker" by David Sklansky
"Small Stakes Hold'em" by Ed Miller
"Theory of Poker" by David Sklansky.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Yes I agree with starting with "Winning Low Limit Hold'em" or "The Theory of Poker" Then one of the best books I've read is "Small Stakes Hold'em" by Ed Miller.

dont like to read, eh? I think your best bet is reding one of the books already mentioned. Every video ive seen has not gotten nearly as in depth as the books do.

I also concur with the recommendation on the Lee Jones book. The first two chapters lay out the difference between "gambling" and "skill" with great clarity. That's not how he presents it but that's what he's doing.

The rest of the chapters offer a lot of prescriptive advice on what to do in an amazingly finely sliced range of circumstances and hands. The advice is sort of recipe-following in nature and you have to do your own inference as to the reasons (going back to the early chapters).

The book is an easy read and not very big.

I did get two videos with Sklansky's name on them. Have only looked at the limit video so far but I like it. They have a group of players playing (what else would they be doing?) limit holdem and four pros doing commentary as the play progresses. (Also a former Playboy model hostessing.) This discussion among the pros is VERY interesting and much more in depth than the typical commentary in the televised tournaments. Some disagreements from time to time. It isn't structured but does get into theory, pot odds, and other concepts.

I'm a big fan of the Disney videos. "The Fox & Hound" is one of my favorites. Wink

LOL

Seriously though, the only good poker videos I know are Mike Caro’s ones on tells. A lot of them are on-line and can be viewed for free but I don’t have the link handy I’m afraid.
