A weekend of Foxwoods and Pacific Poker

Posted Sun Feb 13, 2005 9:46 pm GMT by ViolentMike
I took Friday off from work to have a long weekend so my wife and I headed up to Foxwoods. This was my first time playing in Foxwoods Poker Room, and it is HUGE. I played the NL , blinds were $1 and $2. Max buy in was $100, so that's what I bought in for. I played for about 4 hours and got dealt a bunch of crap. However one hand when I was in the big blind and I had K,9 off suit, pot was raised $5, so since I wasn't getting cards all night and wanted to make a move soon, I limped in. Flop comes Q,J,10 with 2 diamonds on board. So I hit a straight but not the nut straight. Big Slick has me beat as well as anyone who hits a flush draw. I came out betting $15, hoping not to scare anyone from chasing thier hand. Then the tightest player at the table (70 year old man) calls my $15 and raises me $40. He was the original raiser preflop so I put him on either a high pocket pair like Q, J,or 10, drawing to the nut flush draw, or of course Big Slick. I was playing pretty tight all night so when I called his $40 and re-raised him All In for another $57. He doesn't even hesitate to stand up and pull out a fresh hundred dollar bill and call. I thought I was going home broke. Long story short, he called in that situation with Pocket Kings. The turn was a King, so he had trips. All it would have taken was any Ace to end up with the nut straight, good thing there was no other callers. So my 9-K straight held up for about $250.

Earlier today I placed in the top 15 in a sattelite for Pacific Poker's daily $20k tourney. This was the biggest payout for a tourney that I was ever in so I was gettin pumped up. There were 725 entrants. I doubled up right away and had a decent size stack the whole time in there. There were about 140 people left and the blinds were up there around 500 - 1000. Someone with half my chips goes all in and I call with pocket J's. He flips over Q,8 off suit. THe board comes something like A,J,10,2,9. ARE YOU KIDDING ME, he goes all in with that garbage and beats me. The very next hand I get dealt pocket Kings. SWEET, I'm ALL In pre flop on this one. I get called by the chip leader at the table. He has K,J. I GOT HIM DOMINATED. I'm not to sure what the odds of his hand to beat mine, but I do know that they are pretty damn slim and to my dismay the flop comes up J,J,J. WHAAAAT!!

An excellent weekend of poker ended by 2 of my WORST BAD BEATS ever. I ended up in 135th place outta 725. Top 60 payed.

I gotta come up with some kind of question here on the long post, so the question is...... How do you guys play when I tourney hits that point? "That Point" meaning when 1/2 the people remaining will make the money and the blinds are getting High. All I saw was a LOT of blind stealing as usual. There were tons of short stacked. I'm sure if played VERY slow, I may have made the money Sure its no way to win a big tourney but it'll make you some money. Even if I told myself to only play hight pocket pairs and big slick, I still woulda gotten busted playing JJ and KK in back to back hands.

nice job on the straight. I'm pretty sure I know EXACTLY the old guy you are referring to. The only thing wierd about your story is that he "stood up to pull a fresh $100 to call", whereas at Foxwoods the only money playable is that ON the table prior to the hand, and one cannot rebuy unless one is under $40.

Thats a pretty good story.
We never remember the hands we win when we had no business winning but remember when we get kicked in the nuts for one hell of a beat.

My wife and I are going to Foxwoods on Monday and I wanted to play at a $1-$2 NL table.
Do they exist and if so what can I expect for types of players?
One of my long time friend keeps telling me that I shouldnt play cause Ill get taken by sharks.
Now I usually beat him but he thinks he is the best of all of us.

What are others thoughts on this?

Most people played relatively tight except for the 3 "maniacs" at the table. I waited for the big blind to come around to feal it out. Every hand I watched after the flop the bet would be $20 - $30. So my very first hand once I was the big blind I get Q,7 off suit so I check. Flop comes Q,7,2. Sweet! I was first to act and bet only $10 hoping not to to scare away a high pocket pair or top pair with a good kicker. Everyone folded and I won the pot right there Crying .

I would suggest playing pretty tight at first until you buld up a table image, then you can loosen up a big after a couple of hours. But don't believe your friend there and MANY different limits of games and over 150 tables. There won't be a "shark" playing NL for one and two dollar blinds. I can assure you that. Mostly people having a good time and occasionally willing to gamble preflop on a coin toss.

Good Luck to all
Mike

Im still wondering about the "he stood up and pulled money out"

I didnt think any casino allowed you to pull money from pocket mid-hand.

I'll be there on Monday. Yeah there are 1-2 NL tables everywhere. the players are like any other casino, some are good, some are poor.

I gotta chime in with Dias on this one. It's a pretty clear rule that you can't pull money out of your pocket. Why'd they let this go?
