Good books to read? Anything else to help? I need it..

Alright, well I started playing last night for real money. I deposited $75 at pokerroom and finished up with $99 before I had to go to work. I played .25-.50 NL and such. Went up and down a lot before I moved to .50-1 tables and made a few bucks to finish positively.

Well.. so today I go back, and I've lost $300 Sad

I'm not AWFUL, but I know that, in addition to better luck than I got tonight, I need to do something else to improve my game. I've read everything on this site (not forums, but the site) and several other things concerning odds.. What else? How many of you are hardcore calculators? Should I become one?

I suggest you try some low limit hold'em until you get a better feel for starting hands, odds, etc. Things are a little different in NL, but having a good foundation will go far. Also make sure you have a bankroll to withstand variance (200xBB is a pretty good standard). Some pretty good books are Winning Low Limit Hold'em (Lee Jones) and the Theory of Poker by Slansky. Check out the books section of this Forum... some pretty good info.

I highly suggest reading just about everything you can Smile

The Jones book is a good book for beginner's, but I suggest if you want to go farther with it, that you also pick up a copy of Hold'Em for Advanced Players by David Sklansky, and Small Stakes Hold'Em by Ed Miller (this is assuming you're playing fixed limit)

I hear that the Fixed Limit section in Supersystem 2 is pretty good (Jennifer Harmon write it maybe? I dunno, I haven't gotten around to getting SS2)

As for NL literature, the pickins' are a bit more slim. I'm sure there are some good books on NL Hold'em somewhere in the world that aren't specific to tournaments, but I don't have any to speak of (aside from the super system).

As far as calculating.. I'm probably more of a math guy than most on these forums. Being able to calculate the precise expectation you think a bet has is not necessarily key to being a successful poker player. At the least, you should understand the concepts though, and have a decent understanding of the common odds situations (and how to figure out uncommon ones)

Other than that, the other keys are just to keep playing, and keep reading these forums/other forums, keep reading books, and just keep at it. You can pick up a whole lot of wisdom from the 'net and from books, but none of it will matter if you can't put it into practice, and you get better at that by playing.

Good luck to ya

ahh i think my friend has one of those books, slansky. thanks. i'll be sure to pick up one or two to start with.

i'm a math guy, too, and i know all of the theory behind calculating outs, pot odds, and comparing the two. i'm not that quick as far as mental calculations go, but i'm thinking of making a quick program to do that for me. have any of you done that?

Punching in the numbers won't be faster than getting good at it in your head. I'd suggest playing as many hands as you can for money that you can afford. DOn't get ahead of yourself, but the more hands, the more practice, the better you'll be.

If I were you, Id play single table sit-and gos for awhile...not a big swing in your bankroll in such a short amount of time, but can make some good cash if you can progress up into higher buy-ins.
You can play all day without losing too much when your having a bad streak, so they are good practice
