Freerolls a good place to start ?

Posted Mon Feb 14, 2005 11:45 am GMT by leon28oslo
Hiya guys, hope you guys can enlight me abit on a couple of questions.
Is freerolls a place to start when learning Holdem ?
Ive only played hold'm for about a month but have made some money on
different freerolls, but it seems that on the realmoney tables guys are more loose on the cards when calling the flop and later.....is this just my opinion or am i mistaken ?
I've only played on 25/50c and 50/1c.
Thanks for any input :D

You will get a lot of people telling you to avoid freerolls as you would play money tables.
I would disagree and suggest that freerolls are an excellent place to learn tourney play.
Maybe not so much in the early stages where you have lunatics trying to double up with any 2 cards, but if you can tip toe your way thru the minefield to the latter stages you will actually see some pretty decent play.
Freerolls differ from playmoney in that there is actually a goal at the end of it, so altho people may scoff at spending 5 hours to earn a couple of $'s i would say that this can be valuable both in entertainment value and in a learning experience.

As for the difference between freerolls and microlimit cash games..... they are 2 different beasts.
I would suggest that maybe instead of taking your freeroll winnings to a ring game, you accumulate it and try playing some of the lower level sit n go's (or single table tournaments) instead.
These are still a tournament envirionment so may be more suited to your style of play than ring games, which, let's face it, can contain some pretty stupid plays.

I agree with him.

Do the freerolls, and (hopefully) accumulate cash. Also play the play money Sit n' Go tables to get a feel for what Sit n' Gos are like (as far as play money goes, Sit n' Go tend to have the best players). Then start at the lower limit SnG and see how you do!

Freerolls are a different beast than SnG or cash game, imho, but play them anyway.

To begin with, I see nothing wrong with freerolls to gain some limited experience. You must keep in mind that in the real world where cash is on the line, people don't play like that.

I think very early you should graduate to cash games and never play freerolls again. I really believe that once you feel you can move on from there, freerolls will only hurt your game. It is so easy to get into bad habits playing them too much.

Freerolls, like play money, are a good starting place, but you'll get into some very bad habits. Get away as soon as possible.

I actually find that most people don't play that much better in the later stages of freerolls - they are still limping and calling almost anything. You get less aggressive maniacs though.

People play a lot differently when real money is at stake and there is a lot more strategy involved.

Sure, the play is notoriously bad, and the monetary reward is very low in these things...

But as a beginner, you're probably -EV in any poker game you sit at. Here you can get assloads of experience in tons of situations for absolutely nothing.

When I started to get serious about the game, I only played a handful of homegames, and got the majority of the rest of my experience through freerolls. In fact, my bankroll has been built from a monetary investment of precisely zero dollars, thanks to a cash in a freeroll (I mostly played freerolls on pokerpages: I found there to be some actually not completely nutbar play there, well, relative to other freerolls, probably because it's not for money or points, but for an end-of-month ranking.)

While I'm no great shakes in the poker world, I've had some solid success, and owe a good chunk of it to experience gathered playing for free
