Grand Island, James bond chips

Posted Tue Feb 15, 2005 9:18 am GMT by Nickmast
So I recieved my Grand Island chip samples. My first impression is that they look fantastic. Bold colors, Bold wide edgespots. They are a little light but its tolerable. They are very chalky though. I'm wondering, for those that own either the Grand Island or James bond chips, do they lose their sharp edges and some of the chalky feeling?

I haven't seen anyone refer to them as grand island before but I assume you are talking about the Casino De Isthmus City chip made by Blue Chip. Anyway, I'm sure John has something to say on this. I have a sample of ten that have about 48 total hours of shuffling on them. The corners have worn slightly (easier to shuffle now) and the chips have become -slightly- darker from oils and moisture on my hands. Generally I like the look of these chips (the new and old Paulson's look better to me -- surprise)... The feel is ok/good but the edge spots were very inconsistent. Out of the ten, two chips looked right -- even individual spots on one chip were dramatically different from each other, so I would say quality is not too good. Drop test that I did were average i.e. most chips will not break after multiple(15) 5' drops onto my slate floor (ASMs shatter after 4) but definitely got some nicks on the corners. Anyway average chip in my opinion not counting design... If you like the looks and don't want to pay the extra price for the Paulson's then go for it...

Grand Island chips. Made from the same mold as James Bond by Blue Chip.

I've got a large set of the "James Bond" Chips... and YES the edges definately wear in nicely! And the chalkyness goes away in no time! They get better every time you pull 'em out of the case! Love these chips! (One of the few.) Laughing

I bought Grand Islands recently. I pulled 10 out from the set to shuffle, etc. The chalkiness absolutely goes away--I suppose from the oil (or whatever) on your hands. The sharp edges disappear, too. Think of it as breaking in a new baseball glove. The only issue is that it will take some time using the set to break in the entire set. In any event, nice colors on those.

Here is what I have done to my clay set. It took a long time, but I was watching
the tube and my GF was helping.

Use a small amount of baby oil (unscented, and I mean small amount) on
a clean soft cloth.

Lightly oil the clay facing and edge, try to keep the oil off the spots. You will get the hang of doing this without even looking at the chips quickly. You
dont have to rub the oil in, it will get where it needs to be on it's own.

Let sit a few minutes

Wipe clean with a new soft cloth

The colors are richer and the feel is better.
Try this first on one of each denomination and compare to un oiled chips.
And remember, LIGHTLY oil
the cloth. I can't stress this enough.

Why do you need to keep the oil off the spots?

I read that too Ott. My guess is that he meant the inlay an not the edgespots.

Sorry guys....

I still call them center spots or spots. Did I give my age away? Smile
The edge spots are fine, they are clay just like the body.

The center spot is usually linen, or cloth like material.
The oil will discolor them a litte, kind of like sun fading.

Side spots fine

Center spots avoid
