Stupid live play......

Canterbury last night, 8/16, bought in for $200 (one rack or $2 chips) down a little bit about an hour in I am in the big blind.

UTG straddles (about the 3rd time he straddled my blind-means I usually have to call 3-4 bets on my big...not a great position)-table folds to me....I have A Spade A Club ....NICE! I raise, UTG calls.

J Spade 9 Spade 4 Club . I bet out-no free cards w/ 2 draws on the board and a big pot already. He raises, I reraise, he reraises.

Now this guy is a dope who will 3 bet w/ 2nd or 3rd pair or any draw heads up or not. I have about 3 small bets ($24) left so I decide to push here. I reraise, he comes back, I put out my last chips. 6-7 bets on the flop-no cap heads up.

I show my AA, he shows Q4 offsuit. HUH????? WTF????? I had this happen once before preflop w/ AA, never after the flop w/ some idiot calling w/ 7 bets w/ bottom pair and no draw.

Turn 8
River 10

He goes runner runner str8. $180 pot heads up w/ AA vs 3rd pair, I knew I was doomed.

Got back to even, the up a little before losing a $300+ pot at the end of the night w/ AJ board QJJ94 to K10. 2am-work in 4 1/2 hours, time to get home. I hate losing.

Final table at Poker Stars last night, 6 people left (5 places paid). I'm 3rd or 4th with ~5000, blinds are 100/200. UTG raises to 600, I call with AQ on the button, BB calls behind.

The flop:
4QQ

UTG bets 600. The pot is now 2500, I want to take it down now. I go all-in, BB folds, UTG calls (uh-oh) - he has me covered by about a 1000.

Cards flip up, he's got 22.

Turn is a blank, the river is of course a 2.

"Well played," sez me.

Straddled the blinds, caught miracle runner/runner straights, busted my flushes..... Man, I hate losing.

'scuse my ignorance, but what does "straddle the blinds" mean?

Straddling is in limit poker when you raise the blind prior to getting cards. You have to be UTG to straddle though beause it is technically your turn to act, the guys to your left can re-raise after you straddle precards or after because it is then their turn to act.

Ruff night Dave, cant win every night though....unfortunatley.

a straddle is also different from a dark raise. It can only be done preflop and you ARE allowed to raise your own straddle.

It is a foolish play, unless you are an action junkie and looking to make people call 2-3 bets to see a flop. In the long run, you will not benefit by straddling.

So you can straddle and then raise and it would 3 bets to go?

Thanks for the explanation. Man, it doesn't really seem like a very profitable move (the basic straddle). How many hand do you really want to play from UTG for two (or three) bets?

The n + n forum, whose actual name shall not be mentioned, where n is an even integer smaller than 3 (you know, the Sk****** site, but I won't mention his name--the guy that wrote H'EPFAP, but I won't give the actual title)

anyway....has a hilarious post entitled "10 rules for the blind straddle." I think I only remember two of the ten, the first being that no blind straddle should be attempted until the player has consumed at least a dozen beers. Another key rule is that the straddle must be accompanied by the remark "Let's build a big pot" or words to that effect. It is not one of the rules, but the poster also recommends for advanced straddle players that on the flop the straddler either bet out or raise without looking at his cards. It is important when attempting this last, experts-only straddle move that the player remind his opponents that "any two cards can win."
