My final Chip Design. Your thoughts

Posted Thu Feb 17, 2005 11:29 am GMT by Jollyone
02/ 21/ 05. Updated info below.....

Hello all. I have been a lurker here for a while and have really appreciated all the information about chips. I finally decided to buy a nice set of clay chips so I have over the past few months been collecting about 70 sample chips. After all is said and done I think I will go with the Horse Head chip.

I want to make my own design and have posted a link so that you may take a look and let me know your thoughts. The chips are just scanned and then I did some cut and paste stuff. The motif I have chosen is Air Force. I was in for 12 years and worked on A-10s and flew in HH-3s in a rescue unit.

I got the Paulson chip from a local card club (Garden City). I thought about just getting 200 of these for use as my $1 chips. But after seeing them up-close I think I would rather just get new ones and work them in at my card games because the ones I got are REALLY worn in.

I also like the TR-King chips but there web site says that for custom label chips the min order is 5000. Can any one confirm that. If not I'll just call them.

UPDATE: I have posted the final designs (i believe )I will use. Tell what you think.

Click on the pictures to enlarge them.

Thank you in advance for your ideas.

very crisp, unique logo - you should maybe make it larger so the detail can be seen more clearly. I take it you are an A-10 pilot then?

Hi TGuns,
Thanks for the info.
I was a crew chief on A-10s and then became a Flight Engineer on HH-3s.

Cool! I wish I had a nice theme like that for some customs... Yours is so much better than the generic and always terrible-looking "Steve's Card Room" or "John Doe's Casino." Make sure to post the finals if you get them done!

Hi J1,
Great theme. I think the design needs a little work IMO. I might try to incorporate cards into the design rather than having A-10. Also, on the back (I'm assuming your thinking of designs front & back?) I think I would keep "A Cut Above the Rest" together and move "Spec Ops" to "Rescue" maybe "Rescue - Spec Ops". Other than that the back looks good. I just think the bolt/plane is a little small on the front and the plane is hard to distinguish but maybe that's just the way the design is, I don't know.

My 2¢,
Fins

I'm pretty sure the A-10 refers to the airplane, the A-10 Tank Killer (or Warthog) a supposedly kick ass infantry-supporting fighter plane with a kick ass tank busting, depleted uranium shell firing gun in its nose.

Thanks Fins
for the card Idea. I can Use the Ace and 10 of spades for the A and the 10. I agree the the SPEC OPs design needs so more work.

I should have said in my orginal post that I would go with only one of the designs not both. I don't have that kind of money. But it is a great idea.

Dre0000,
Yep the A-10 is a happy little tank killer.
Official name: A-10A Thunder Bolt II.

Thank you all for your input.

Hey Jolly, I mocked up an A-10 design using cards instead of text like Fins suggested. Seeing as I don't know how to post images, you can PM me your email if you want I'll send a jpg of it to ya.

Garden City's chips are usually pretty well worn, sometimes you can barely see the H&C on the chip. If you get the ones with the Grand Inlay they're a little newer, but they too will show signs of significant wear. Can't think of any places around here that use Paulson chips. Lucky Chances and Artichoke Joe's uses Chipcos, and Bay 101 uses Bud Jones. I think the Garlic City Club in Gilroy may be the closest place that uses Paulsons. I wouldn't even think of investing $200 into Garden City chips unless I was just going to 'rent' them for a couple of nights and then cash them in.

While TR King list 5000 as the minimum for custom chips at the $.75 rate, I'm pretty sure they'll do customs at smaller quantities, but the price is liable to go up dramatically. You're best bet would be to give Dennis a call down at TR King; he's a nice guy and easy to work with.

One other item you might want to consider is a vinyl labeled clay chip. I like the Blue Chip chips with the recessed center for the vinyl labels. I've found the vinyl labels from Online Labels to be terribly difficult to work with off of the backing sheets, but the vinyl material itself is incredibly strong and flexible (and heavy). My labels were sprayed with 4 coats of Krylon Crystal Clear Satin, and in the process of fighting the sheet to separate the label from the backing sheet (without having to take a portion of the paper backing with me), my thumbnail slipped over several of the labels pretty hard. There was never a scratch on the printed surface. The incused area on the Blue Chip product is about 1.1 to 1 1/16 in diameter so there is a little bit of a blank area when using a 1" label, so some of the labels will end up a little off center unless you're very careful.

are the horsehead mold chips similar in feel to the trkings or more so the blue chip company chips
thanks

Wouldn't know, it's been years since I've even seen a ASM chip, and I've never handled a ASM home chip. In terms of weight, I'd think they're more like the Blue Chip chips. The TR King chips are a pretty solid 10gr chip in all of it's variations.

I am sitting here with all of them in my hands and it’s actually difficult to say. Really they are all unique to them selves but if you pin me down I would say asm's(horse head) feel more like blue chips. I say this primarily because the tr king has a coating across the entire face of the chip that makes it slick(relatively speaking). To me it looks like the inlay actually covers the whole face of the chip rather than just a spot in the center... If that makes sense. Anyway, asm and bluechips (other than the inlay) are raw clay and have a more organic, dull feel to me. That coating does, however, really give the trk chip durability and probably makes it easier to clean if need be.

HOSTING = try ImageShack... it's easy

I guess it depends on where you are getting them (and possibly how many) but I don't think PC.com charges for diff front/back images or it's not very much... you could check out Whalemangler's chip post as he used diff front/back and might have referenced cost. Now, TR King I could see charging more. Also, Gosain's & Clonexx chips used diff front/back. If it interests you I'd confirm the cost if there's any with doing both labels (front/back).

Hi All,
I have posted a couple new mock-ups using cards.

PocketRocket, Thanks for the information about TRKing.

Fins, Thanks for the lable information. If it isn't too much more maybe I could swing it. It would be cool to have two different sided chips.

Again thanks for the info

For C-5's I', currently building a table and was considering airbrushing the new Airforce wing Logo on the middle of the table

Also if you follow up with pc.com you might check on the use of 2 colors, again if that intrests you... e.g. you could do them denoms in red. I think the price is the same for 1 or 2 colors (maybe even up to 3... I can't remember... e.g. a yellow ltning bolt?)... you could also PM some of the folks I mentioned for answers/more info.

anyone purchase the ASM horse head mold with custom colors but without the custom inlay, whats the price.

Posted Fri Feb 18, 2005 8:44 pm GMT by PocketRocket
There's a price list on Pokerchip.com's web site that lists all of that. You might also want to give them a call as some of the chip patterns that are listed as limited to a particular style aren't when you talk to them. For what you want, it could start at $.50 if they're blank chips. More if you want a hot stamp, and even more with an inlay. The chips are not recessed, a sticker won't do well with those.

I think that the emblem would be cool. although having the old MAC logo would be cooler. I assume you mean C-5 as in you flew them or crewed them?

I also updated the chips with a couple. I think these will be the last mock-ups. I'll probably tweek them and then just pick one the one I like best.

Hi All,
I have posted the the final design (i hope...we'll see) for my chips.
I have added some color to the chips. It will depend on the over all cost as to how much color I use or if I have two different side on each chip.

By the way, Has any one ordered customs from Kardwell? If so what was your experiance like?

Thanks again.

Here is the link.

Sweet!! Great job... destined to be a family heirloom Smile

They're just a distributor for ASM's sales arm pc.com so you're better off straight to PC. Call for a quote from Dennis at TR King for what you want... they'll do under 5000 but at a premium but they also offer double edge spots... let us know what you get quoted. Get samples from him if you haven't already... since you have 70! I hope you have already Wink

The design's so nice you should get your army buds (or others) to go in on a group buy! Probably a lot of hassle but might be worth it in the end. Might even do well on e-bay!

Let us know what you decide and as always post pics when you get 'em!

I wanted to let you know that I placed the order for my chips on Friday through Pokerchips.com.

I place the order with Debbie. She told me that there is no extra charg for having two different inlays so that sinched it for me to use both mockups. Also the $50 bucks for color is flat fee. From her inforamtion I belive you can use however many colors you like and it's still $50 buck. (this is my feeling and not a fact so please be sure to confirm!) My chip inlays will have only 2 colors on each side.

After that Debbie turned me over to Natalie the graphic artist. She was very nice and she had me send my mockups to her. She said she would email me back proofs by the end of this week. I'll post the pic's when I get the final proofs.

The chip details....Qty 500 chips

Chip color...../......Edge spot.
01-white..............31-Lt Green
11-red.................63-gray
33-green.............41-yellow
61-black..............81-pink
73-purple............51-orange

The Money....

500 chips:..............$475
Custom inlay:..............0
add color:..................50
sub total:.................525
shipping:...................32.40

Final total:..............$557.40

I'll post pic's when the chips arrive. I'm hopping
before the 4th of July! Wink

Once again, thanks for all the feed aback.

Thanks for all the info. So you decide against the yellow bolt (it'd make 3 colors)? Post the proof when you get it. Did you ever get a quote from Dennis at TR King?

I guess we'll have to wait with you for actual chip pics Sad
I'm sure it'll be worth it though :D

You cant really compare the 3, they are all very unique chips that are almost impossible to compare!
