Opinions on Nevada Jack Clays

Posted Fri Feb 18, 2005 8:11 pm GMT by RMD928
First , I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to join and start posting. The group has a wealth of information for all and I've enjoyed reading all the informative posts.

Second , I'd like the groups opinions of the Nevada Jack Clay Chips. The ones I'm refering to are the real clay not the composites and not the Martini's.

I'm now using Chipco "Suits" but I think I may like a real clay set instead.
I host a regular home game weekly and usually a bigger tourny once a month(around 30) so I'm interested in the clays durability as well as playability.

Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

I second this even though I have a set of 300 new paulsons coming I would still like to know what the deal with these chips are

Rough guesstimate, but if you're using the 5 times a month, and your kids, grandchildren do the same, they might start to wear out by the time the grandkids are in their 30s? You can probably expect the same poor wear pattern from 'real clay chips' Smile

I think Blue Chip makes those chips. I've got some of their sun/flames home chips, they're obviously clay, but not of the same quality that one would expect from a casino quality chip. I've noticed the casinos that use their casino products tend to only use their chips for lower denominations. I'd guess the they can't provide RFID or the bar codes that the casinos might want in the higher values.

First, get samples. Everyone says this, but it's really true!

Are you looking only at NJ Clays? There are other clays out there you might want to look at....

But to respond to your questions about NJs:

These are good Blue Chip chips, made with the Nevada mold, traditional colors, and good edge spots. (Personally, after playing with the samples, I like the Martini Club mold in my hand better than the NJ mold, but they're very close.) I think these are better than the other Blue Chip "Flames/Seashell" mold products.

Of course, they have denominations on them, unlike your Suits. For tournament play, you can get a higher denom in the NJs, up to $1,000, and both 25¢ and 50¢ chips for cash play.

They have nice cross-hatching on the surface, and bright smooth inlay labels. (The inlay surface of the Martinis is cross-hatched.)

These will feel great when you're playing them, especially after they get broken in a little. They will last a loooong time, and (in my opinion) just get better and better. When the edges get rounded/softened a little and the oil from your hands makes the colors stand out, you'll love 'em.

I've heard some quality issues on Blue Chips recently, but my samples (and service) from NJ were excellent.

I think they're the equal of the new Paulson home chips, though a little lighter in weight.

They're priced high, but about at the market for this quality chip.

If the NJ clays are anything like the James Bond clays (also made by Blue Chip) I'd stay far away. The James Bond ones are way too light, have at least one or two defects per chip. It was sad.

You can also see quality issues in the buypokerchips.com chips. But the NJ chips I have are not representative of this at all. They are one of my favorite chips and as I said the ones I have are great, in ever aspect (I only have a few samples mind you). RMD928, you said you've been lurking for a while so I assume you have checked out pokerchipreviews.com? If not you should.

Anyway, I rate the NJ Nevada mold chips "aces", so to speak.

I would totally suggest getting samples. I've been looking for a good set of chips for over month and been collecting samples all thoughout. Every time I get a set in the mail I'm waiting for the next set. Trking chips are fantastic. But yet with use they get dirty REALLY quick. Dont get me wrong they are fantastic chips. I have a sample set of the Grand Island Casino chips also, same as the James Bond chips (the most recent I have received). When I first got them my first impression was, they are light, and VERY chalky. After chip riffling them for a few hours, FANTASTIC CHIPS!!!! They just need to be worn in. The oils from my hands and riffling constantly, made them a great chip overall. When I got my first sample, it was Chipcos. The "suits" and "classics". I loved them right off the bat but wanted to see what the clay chips are all about. Next I got the TRKing samples. I LOVED them instantly. The clays just felt better in the hand. Next I got the grand island chips. After playing with these, I liked them more than TRKing chips. I have the nevada jacks "dead mans" chip samples and the Crystal Oyster chips coming. Right now my favorite is the grand island. BUT, the grand island are 1.25 a piece. If the "dead man" NJ feel anything like the "suits" and "classics" I'm gonna go with them. For the price you cant beat it. (half the price of the grand island).

BOTTOM LINE!!!!......GET SAMPLES!!!! everytime I get a new sample in, I can compare them to the previous samples that I have. Yes, you spend $75 to $100 on samples, but you can always sell your samples to others that are looking for chips just like you are, and recoup your money to an extent.

I have a 300 chip set of the NJ clays and I love them. I still want to get a custom set from ASM just because of having some control on colors, mold type and inlay. As far as the NJ Clay, they are fantastic chips. They have only been used twice so far, so I still need some breaking in for them to really take shape. They have received great reviews from pokerchipreviews.com. Here is the review:

Nevada Jacks: Take the Martini Club chips from above, and take a baby step towards the BuyPokerChips.com clay chips, and you have the Nevada Jack's Clay. A 'softer' feeling chip than the Martini Club, these really nail 'the perfect handling chip' award in my book. The 'NEVADA' imprinted on the chip surface is just GREAT. These chips look outstanding and are great to handle. Great, great chip. Manufactured by Blue Chip Co.
WEIGHT: 8.7- 9.4 grams
FEEL: 9.0
QUALITY: 9.5
LOOKS: 9.5
Manufacturer: Blue Chip

Here is a pic of the chips I have so far from NJ.

I just ordered 25 of the NJ Clays to sample and will make a decision when I get them.
The pic of your 300....the $500 chip looks a little blue? Is is more purple or blue?

Looks blue to me.

It's more purple; the camera flash kinda affected the color a bit.

Deakon

I was wondering how you broke up your 300 set? Did you have to break them up in groups 25 like on the website or do you get what you ask for when you order 300. My other question is did you get a discount on the 300. I was doing the math off their website and it seems to cost more per chip to get 300 at least from the price on that first page.

thanks

Chapa

Flashes play havoc on blue items, it's a light spectrum thing that I can't
explain but my techy, IT, geek tells me about all the time

The 2 chip pic here is no flash, but to truly show the edge spots we had to
flash, see what it did to the faces. Even on top of the stacks.

Hey Chapa,

I just bought them in two different orders. The first one was 150 chips, then I bought another 150 a couple weeks later. They ran a special at one time, but it has been a while since they have done it for the clays.

LOL, yeah, I did the math on the 300 chip set and it is cheaper to buy them seperate. The only reason they are 1.36 per chip rather than 1.25 per chip is because they give you a case and some extra goodies. But, if you don't need the case, buy them per 25 stack.

flatbed scanner did a nice job w/o washing out colors... would that work?

I got a sample of 25 and Ill compare them to the new Paulsons. The NJ clays are lighter but not by much. The NJS are heavier than the Blue chip Bonds, and are of much better quality.

However they are not of the same quality as the New Paulson chips, not even close. The inlay on the Paulsons (while not to everyones liking, size design ect....) is absolutley flawless in its placement on the chips.

The Inlays on the NJS vary from excellent to ok, none are awfull, at leasr on the sample chips I recieved. I did notice on one chip however that it (the chip) didnt seem to break away from the mold cleanly and the chip while still functional wasnt pretty to look at to say the least.

The inlays on the Paulson chips is as smooth as glass while on the NJS it is textured like the Blue chip co bonds.

That being said I like the inlay design of the NJS better but thats just a personal preference.

The sound of the NJS is brighter than the Paulsons definitly more of a click while the Paulsons are definatly clackers.

The Paulsons softer feel about them and have a little more grip on the sides of the chip, but are much smoother on top, mainly due to the size of the inlay and the smaller border.

The border of the Paulsons has much more grip than the NJS but its surface area is maller so their is that trade off.

Any way you cant really go wrong with either chip but after handling both I would go with the Paulsons also the Paulson colors are just outstanding even before oiling them up.

I actually just got a sample set of the NJ clays and I'm very impressed. Since they were made by Blue Chip, I was afraid they'd be similar to the Clamshel JB chips, but they're completely different. The NJs do not feel light like the JB chips did. They have nice sound, nothing like the "THUD" of the JB chips. I think they look great (as you can see in the picture); the $500's color is a little out of place, but the rest all have a very old-west look to them, which is what you should expect. The inlays are well done, much better than the JBs. They aren't all 100% perfect, but there are no noticeable gaps like the Clamshell JBs had.

The thing these chips have that the new Paulsons and other clay chips don't have is a variety in the edge spots. The new Paulsons look very bland (IMO) with the same edgespot scheme on each chip. The NJs have all different patterns on the chips. Some have 4 spots, some have 3, some are double, some are single, some have the same colors for each spot, some have two different colors for each spot. Lots of variety. I've never touched the new Paulsons, so I can't comment on the feel, but I would definitely consider these NJs while I would never consider the Paulsons - simply based on the design: the generic looks, the small inlay, the PAULSON CHIPS outer edge. But that's just me.
