Was this good play, or blatant luck?

Ok, So I was playing at a local home game last night. Buy in was only $20, and I was pretty much even for a while.

I get dealt Pocket 3's, at mid-position. I call blinds. Dealer raises $1, me and one other call.

Flop : 5,5,6 (no flush draws). At this point I'm sitting on just a mere two pair. Opponent raises $2, one guy folds, I call.

Turn: 4. Now i have two pair, and straight draw. Opponent raises $3. I thought about it for abit, and i knew i would still have a decent stack if he took me out. I didn't want to make this too risky, so I only called.

River: Boom! 3. I just hit my full house. My opponent checks, and I figure he's trying the old check raise. I go $2, in attempt to lure him in. He raises $3 (knew this would happen) and I push all-in, and additional $10. Now I've got him thinking for a good long time. He has to have hit the straight, because no one would think about a full house call for this long. At this point he's trying to read me, so I try something knew, 'reverse tells'. I try to put on the face as if I am bluffing my ass off and feel very uncomfortable, and I make sure to keep looking at the board to make it look like I had missed my straight or something. He says "You don't look too comfortable over there, ... call".

Yup, he flops the straight, very confidentaly ... and flip my 3's back. Astonishment on his part. Doubled up, and sent me in the right direction for the rest of the night.

What I'm asking is if this was a real dumb move / and if it was pure luck, or If anyone would have done the same.

On a side note, I've been hitting an amazing amount of mid pocket pairs lately, and have a tendency to hit 3 of a kind off the flop.

Well you've got 4 outs and that is if you are behind, I like the call, and the agressiveness on the river.

You didn't overplay your hand and it's hard to get away from it when the board is 6 high.

Well done.

Just remember for every one of those times you trip up your pocket pair now, you owe the odds gods 8 times not doing it. Beware the future!!

off the turn you had 10 outs, which is decent, plus maybe u thought he was bluffing and you had the 3's, you also make it sound like you put on a good acting job, so i say it was a good play with lots of luck.

let me phrase this nicely:

to win pot: 4 outs at best. if opp. doesn't have a five.

splitting a pot is not winning a pot.

Have a nice day.

1. Tell that to hi-lo players.

2. If there is more than the number of splitters in the hunt then a split is definately a win.

3. As with everything else in this game IT ALL DEPENDS.

Please explain to me why there are only 4 outs in his eyes if he doesn't know what his opponent has. I see on the turn an open ended straight draw and 2 threes left. Please explain this to me why he only has 4?

Well look at it this way:

Pre-flop, we have one raiser in late position who is probably representing high cards, probably not a pocket pair. As long as we're guessing over cards, that is a great looking flop for us.

Chances are, we're up on the flop with two small pair. It seems unlikely the raiser had a 5, unless it was 55 in which case we're already drawing dead. We're ahead, and chances are that we still have good chances to improve our hand:

1. a 3 or a 5 will give us a full house, so there's 4 outs right there, if we're behind, which I doubt we are.
2. 3 cards to a straight, which others are unlikely to have, but we can't count those outs just yet since we need two more cards.

On the turn we're looking great because we still have two pair which is strong 3-handed. We have 4 outs in the 3's and 5's, and now 8 more outs with 2 or 7. That's 12 outs (or 8 not to lose + 4 to win anyway), which is enough to call that $3 bet.

So yeah, I'd say it was well-played.
