Nut flush and board isn't paired

I was playing in a tournament with some friends when this hand happened.

I was in the small blind with about 2000tc, the blinds were 25/50 and the guy I ended up showing down with (let's call him Beano) had about 3000tc. We were down to 4 players.

I got Ad5s in the pocket and Beano called the big blind. The button folded, I made up the blind and the big blind checked.

The flop came down 2d3d4d which gave me a straight (but not the best straight) and of course I would be losing to any flush. My feeling was that as I was in first position I couldn't bet at that flop because I was the shortest stack on the table and I wouldn't have been confident of calling any raise. Besides, if another diamond comes off I would have the nuts - there would be 4 diamonds to my ace and the board isn't paired. How many times have we said to ourselves "the board isn't paired so my flush can't be beat"??

Anyway, I check, the big blind checks and Beano checks as well which makes me think that my straight is probably good and, since nobody tried to steal it, that one or both of them could be sitting on other high diamonds - hopefully one has the queen and one the ace. The turn card comes down 9d so as far as I am concerned I am well in the lead and contemplating how to get as many chips as possible out of it. I check in first position, the big blind checks (I think he has filth but he doesn't really matter) and Beano makes a bet of 50. I read this bet as a feeler bet. Perhaps he is holding a low flush, perhaps he already had a low flush and the fourth diamond has potentially ruined his hand, perhaps he did have that nut straight and now he is trying to see if it is still any good. Anyway, I am well ahead of whatever he has so I just call the bet and hope that the river doesn't pair the board (the big blind folds).

The river comes down 10h so my nut flush can't be beaten. Now I think I have a problem because I don't put Beano on much of a hand because he is usually quite aggressive and I don't want to scare him out of the pot. After deliberating I decide to make a weak bet to try and get him to raise me out of it. I bet 300 and sit back. He thinks for a while and then asks me how many chips I have left. Excellent, he is going to set me all in and sure enough he does just that. Without hesitation I call the bet and stick all my chips in the middle. What cards has he got? King of diamonds? Queen of diamonds? It doesn't really matter, he can't beat my flush. At this point (bad etiquette I know) I showed my hand and started to collect the pot.

Of course, everybody should know how this story ends. When I made the straight on the flop, I was aware that I could be beaten by a better straight but knew that I would have the best flush if another diamond came off. When the fourth diamond dropped the straight was irrelevant so it went from my mind. Why did it never occur to me that Beano could be holding a straight flush?? Probably because I have never seen one in a live game before and only a couple of times online.

Realisation dawned just in time. As I showed the ace and said words to the effect of "count them out Beano" (I was so eager to call the all in that I had not given him any chance to push any chips) the look on his face told me that something was not quite right. I looked again at the board and said something like "I have the nuts. Unless.... You have a straight flush...???"

Sure enough Beano rolls the 5 and 6 of diamonds and my "nuts" hand is beat all ends up. The kind of hand you dream of playing, though not from the side I played it! Not only did he make a straight flush, he made it on the flop.

Does anybody see any way I could have got out of the hand alive??

I have been on the other side of that once in a multitable. I had something like 8 5 suited in the BB and the flop came 4 6 7 suited. I slow played all the way to the river, one dude hit a str8 (w/ a low flush on the river), and the other had the suited A.

I won a HUGE pot which let me get aggressive on smaller pots and took me all the way to the last 2 tables.
