I live about an hour away from Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods. I'm pretty much in the same position as some of the others mentioned in these threads. I've visited the poker areas in both of these casinos, but am pretty intimidated by the speed of the game. Just a few questions for anyone who might be familiar with these casinos.
- Any preference between Foxwoods and Mohegan ?
- Someone mentioned being able to get a private instructional class. Anyone have experience of this in one of these places ?
- I understand the whole small/big blind thing, but what about the rules about when you initially sit down? Do you wait for a button to pass, or pay a big (dead) blind? (Forgive me if I don't know the lingo, its just what i thought i read in playing in one of the online tables)
- How does the buy-in work? How do you figure out how much you sit down with?
- Are the rules about when you can leave?
thanks

Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

Take the private instructional class... I took a free one out here in Los Angeles. You have questions about protocol, and the person who sits down with you will answer your questions to the "t".
I know it's intimidating... don't get frustrated or feel too intimidated. You may even feel a small choke in your voice as you call for "chips". People are yelling all over the place for something.
Every table may have at least one fool on it, but plenty more have at least one a**hole. Don't feel intimidated. You'll do fine. :D

OK, I'm screwed. Neither Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods offer the instructional class. Can anyone help on some of the specific questions I had? I'm also kicking around the idea of visiting vegas to get started on some of the lower limit tables.

Played in 7-stud tourney at Foxwoods on thursday. Alot of fun and did pretty well. 63 people to start and I was the last one out before they trimmed down to 1 table of 8. Too bad they only paid top 8 spots......
It was the first time I played there at all let alone in a tourney. The people were first calss and very very imformative. Get there a little early especially if you have never been there. I had a friend who used to work there take me down and help me get were I needed to be. After the tourney, I played $1-3 all freaking night. And I do mean all night. Got back into the hotel room in old Mystic at like 430 in the morn.
When you go in, just asked one of the many, many employees and they will direct you to the sign up board. Shoot, once you enter the poker room you will see them. One is for 7 stud and the other is for every thing else. Table etiquette is handled at the table by the dealers and they WILL tell you what to do if you don't jump when you are supposed to. I get spoken to about not throwing my cards far enough in when I folded. that and for the guy next to me swearing. Still havent figured that one out.
as far as buying in, again, just ask whern you go to sign in. They will show you the placard for the particular game that has all of the buys, limits and any blinds that are required. I don't know about hold em but standard on stud is low card opens.
Leaving well, as long as you arent in a tourney, get up and go.
The only thing I would say is stop out front of the poker room and get a "Wampum Card" because they will ask for it and if you don't have one they will direct you out to get one. It's just another way to track who plays and you get player points. For a tourney and 6 hours at the table I got 3.53 points. Equates 1 point, 1 dollar.
Go to www.foxwoods.com and check out the site.
Mohegan sun, well, atmospere is nicer, cleaner, prettier, and I got 0.53 points for playing 30 minutes of slots. The poker room is smaller and not as active. Lower limits I think as well.
Any other questions????

Thanks alot for the info! I have a trip to vegas planned in april, and will probably do the instructional stuff there in excalibur (like some recommended here) I think after that i'll feel more comfortable with hitting any of the poker rooms over here. Overall, I do like the Mohegan casino better, nicer people, closer to the highway, etc. But I think for poker, I'll have to go over to Foxwoods
thanks again!

As a note, I have played poker in Vegas and in now in Foxwoods and the rules of etiquette are different. Same game, little subtle differences. and while in Vegas, go dump some money amd play at the Horseshoe.
Maybe we can do a tournet at Foxwoods when you get up to it. I go down once a month for the thurs or sat tourneys as I have time off.....

i played at mohegan sun on wednesday night. it was fun. that was my first time playing a casino. all they had was a 3-6 table. there was also a 50+15 tournament with the first place winner getting a ticket to vegas, and a seat at the wolds series of poker (worth 10,000) !!!
i would of played in that had i knew about it, but we got there around 7:30, and that started at 7.
so we played for about 6 hours, and i walked away up about 110. not bad for my first time. i played some bad hands, and had a real bad beat as well. but overall it was lots of fun, and worth it.
email me at macedaddy24@hotmail.com if you want to know more. i think i might head down again this week, if you want to meet up there or soemthing!

You can "post" a Big Blind when you sit in, but you should wait till you must post the big blind. That way you see play for a while. A general rule of thumb is to buy in for 20X the big bet.
