Automatic card shuffler?

Posted Tue Feb 22, 2005 7:23 pm GMT by dgold41
Anyone have experience with these things? The WSOP shuffler looks like the quality is good? How is the battery life, etc.

Also, anyone ever try those auto-shufflers with a manual handle?

I've seen these things, but have never used one.....I wonder if are they good for Kems or Copags, bridge size.

I'll come back to check replies and appreciate any feedback with helping me decide.

I can shuffle 7 times in 10 seconds or so. No need for fancy bridging and all that. Certainly no need for a shuffler. Even if the dealer doesn't shuffle his own deck, there should be two decks per table and the deck will be shuffled by someone by the time it's needed.

Most or the battery operated shufflers are from the same company (don't know who), but it gets branded under a bunch of different names. You should be able to get the 2 deck shuffler for around $4-6 wholesale and you can find them on the retail shelves (like Target) under names like Bicycle for about $10. I've seen some mom&pops and some web sites mark them up a lot more, but they're all the same shuffler with different brand badges on them.

To each his own . . . but I can't imagine ever using a shuffler. Call me a snob if you will.

Some friends of mine have one. I tried it a couple times one night and it was a pain in the ass, loud, not any faster because of the time it takes to split the deck, run and then unload... I mean it only take a few seconds but I think the only time its worth a crap is if you insist on using paper cards and you are trying to extend the life of them. Personally I enjoy shuffling by hand, its just part of playing cards...

By chance, I got two last Christmas. The WSOP one I received was identical to the no-brand one I got, sans WSOP lable.

I have yet to use them for a live game because (1) KEMs and the shuffler don't mix (2) it takes too long to use and (3) there are no mechanics at my home game so I trust the human sufflers.

I think they are somewhat lame. I was at Brookstone and played with one of these cheap shufflers to test the mixing capability. I arranged the cards by rank (i.e. all the A's together, all the K's together, etc.) then ran them through a few times. Most of the cards were still together with their brethren afterwards. It seems as if these cheap shufflers intersperse the cards in somewhat large clumps (4-5 cards each) and don't achieve the fine alternation that a quality hand riffle can. Of course, if you ran the cards through many times I would imagine they would eventually get mixed up. Maybe you could just have the first player who folds become the "Feeder of the Shuffler" and have them continuously run the cards through during the remainder of the hand so that they would be ready for the next deal?
