B&G Ceramic chips - pics

I played with some ceramic chips at an Indian casino in California this week. At first I thought they were the standard Chipcos, but after looking at the small logo on the face, I realized they were B&G chips.

Many people know this is the French company that bought Paulson / Bud Jones and is now the biggest chipmaker in the world (GPI). B&G has been making different types of chips for many years before the Paulson purchase, but mostly for use outside the U.S.

So I thought I'd post a few pictures and my opinions about these chips, since we don't see them very often. (The BG logo is at 3 o'clock on the face of each chip.)

1. I think these chips are the equals of Chipcos. The quality level, sharp printing, bright colors, etc. are what we've come to expect from Chipco.

2. The finish is not as smooth as Chipcos. It's a little more of a linen finish, but not as textured as NJ skulls or Desert Sands. Just a very slight texture that actually felt very good. They played great at the tables.

3. The design was made (like Chipcos) with a white ring around the edge of the rim. Probably for the same reason -- not to show as much wear.

4. Speaking of wear, my impression is that these chips were not wearing quite as much as Chipcos. Of course, I don't know how old the chips were, but compared to a number of other casinos who use Chipco, the overall stock of chips at both poker and blackjack tables seemed to be in better shape. Not nearly as many very poorly worn chips.

5. The edges were printed with edge stripes, the casino name, and the denomination, just like Chipco will do. The $1 chip has stripes while the $5 chip had simulated triple (clay-style) edge spots on the edges and the faces.

6. But the neatest thing was that the edge "spots" actually lined up with the face! This was true for both sides of the face and on all the hundreds of chips I handled. Chipco doesn't seem to be able to do this.

7. Finally, I hate to disappoint everybody, but there were no "nipples" (or "pimples" as John calls them) on the rolling edge. All night long I was rolling chips in my fingers and testing them with my fingernails to find a pimple, but I just couldn't. (I'm sure my fellow poker players thought it was some kind of crazy tell...) And no ridges either.

8. Oh, and they're 40mm in diameter instead of the standard 39mm in the U.S.

(And thanks to PaulsonChips for steering me to Pechanga.)

many other casinos use BG, Palms for one. they are probably more expensive than chipco. but their quality is remarkably better. chipco has no excuse to not line up their edges.

and yes, Pechanga is very nice place. never played poker there but have made alot of money playing blackjack.
