I am sure this has been asked alot but I will toss this out for the umpteenth time (since my needs may be different).
I am basically waiting for the 2005 Paulson group buy to go thru to be the proud new owner of a 500 chip set. I am choosing 500 because my games will be mostly 6-9 player home games and will not use them for tourneys etc....
I am not sure how I will configure the buy ins etc but do think it is important to have a well spread set. Most games I have played at that are well done don't require constant change to be made etc.....
Sadly I am not a huge fan of the white chips but not sure how to incorporate them as a min blind chip without needing a large quantity of them.
Any suggestions of what denoms I should get to make 500 would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

I'll say what I got so people can rip my choice apart.
10 $.50
10 $1
10 $5
180 $25
180 $100
75 $500
35 $1000
After reading a few posts, I liked the suggestions of having $25 be the lowest denom, and starting out with equal stacks of 20 $25's and 20 $100's. I just got the 10 $.50's, $1's and $5's to mess with, not to use in games.
The above will service 9 people this way (9 x 20 = 180). The blinds can be as follows:
25/25
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
200/400
300/600
...
After you get to 100/200, you can get rid of the $25's and trade some $100's for $500's and $1000's
Another cool thing about having the $25's be the lowest denom is they can be $.25 in cash games.

I use this structure...
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
and so on.
I start everyone with a stack (20) of $25 and one stack of $100. Thats 2500 chips, or 50 large bets. You can change the blinds to however you want to control the overall time of your game. If you have enough players, it helps to have extra $100 chips to color up the $25's. Also, $500 chips are a good idea depending on the amount of players.

Does anyone have any recommendations about which denoms NOT to get? I know most people say don't get a $10 if you have $5 and $25 but this set does not have $10....any other input on what NOT to get?

I wouldn't get many $.50 for 2 reasons. It's half $1 and thus sort of redundant (like the $10). Secondly, white chips appear to get dirty much more easily.
In some pictures of the new Paulsons, it appears that some colors can slightly rub off on other chips (although it's possible this may be due to oiling them and not waiting for them to dry before playing with them?) I suspect the whites show the rub-offs a lot worse than the rest. Anyone with sets have any comment on the rubbing off?
As you can see above I got 35 $1000's, which I admit are a little redundant also. My excuse is that it will make the pots a little more colorful, and redundancy at higher denoms probably isn't nearly as cumbersome as at lower denoms.

No prob. I'm no expert though. Anyone have any critiques on my denoms listed above? Nugzy, it sounds like we're on the same page regarding starting everyone out with 20 $25's and 20 $100's. With this in mind, which denoms would you recommend for a set of 500?

This is what I have coming for my custom Kings Crowns:
25¢ x 50
$1 x 100
$5 x 200
$25 x 200
$100 x 100
$500 x 50
$1000 x 25
750 total.
It's a good T1000 tourney set, or T1250 for up to 20 or so players. Just knock off the 25¢, $1, and 50 of the $25, and you've got a good 500 piece tournament set. We rarely play cash games, but I wanted to be able to support a small one at least...plus I designed the chips, so I wanted at least a few of each...hence the few smaller denoms.

if you are only playing cash games then you could get away with 3 colors, leaving lots of chips available for everyone when they sit down, cash everyone in for the bottom two denoms and use the higher ones for rebuys (buy off the table)
I got a set that does me for both tourneys and cash games (UPS should be here any moment...)
the chips I'll be using for the cash game are:
200 x $0.25 = $50
200 x $1.00 = $200
200 x $5.00 = $1000
we play .25/.50 NL with a $20 buyin so that will be plenty. you could get away with something simlar with only 100 of the "Rebuy" denom.
