Texas Hold-em....who wins?

A question of who wins.....
In a hand that came down to 2 players with each having exactly the same hand, I'm sure how the winner is established. The board was showing: Q, 10, 9, 8, 7, and each player had a J in their hand. Therefore, both players had a straight. The contention by some is that the final card in the players' hands would decide the winner. One player had a 10 and the other a 7. My contention is that when the game is called you designate the five cards you are playing. The extra card in your hand means nothing at that point and is no longer in consideration, therefore it cannot be used as tie-breaker.

Question: Does the hand end in a draw with the two remaining players splitting the pot, or would the person with the 10 left in their hand win?

its a split pot

It's a split pot because, in Texas Hold'Em, the best five cards are used. In an example with two pair where each player has the same two pair, the one holding the highest remaining card would win. In your example, however, both had the same best five cards (Q high straight) and they would split the pot.
