Pre-denominated vs. Non-denominated: Opinions? |

I am considering getting 1k (250 x $5, 350 x $25, 300 x $100, 100 x $500) of the new Paulson chips as my "end-all-be-all-pass-them-on-to-my-son-when-I-die" chips, but the one thing that causes me some concern is the idea that pre-denominated values make you somewhat less flexible in value assignment and even can become irrelevant over time due to inflation: | Quote: | | From www.homepokertourney.com Do not get denominations ($5, $100) printed on your chips as these numbers might be meaningless 50 years from now when you pass your chips on to your great-grandson. | For example, with my current Costco (non-denominated) set, I sometimes use both the whites and blues as $0.25 and the reds as $1 for $0.50/$1 limit HE. I know I could do the "divide by 100" trick with $25 and $100 chips for the above limit, but what about moderately higher limits like $2/$4 or $3/$6? I almost feel like I'll have to buy like 1-2k in $1 chips in addition to my $5-$500 assortment to allow for moderately higher limit games. I would appreciate any thoughts, opinions, or advice on this, thanks.

I personally like denominations on chips, although I think I'm going to get chips without them simply because of cost considerations. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to keep the same colors for the same denominations...I'll never think of white (or blue) as anything other than $1, red as $5, green as $25 and black as $100, etc. For low-limit cash games, I'll just treat the dollars as cents. If my needs ever are such that I'll need higher denominations, I'll just get more chips.
Denominations on chips are really a personal preference, so you'll just have to figure that out on your own.

If this happens than they'll be all the more special! Plus you're setting up denoms for tourneys so if inflation out grows that ... be afraid.

I like denoms and I think tourney denom sets work well for penny ante & quarter cash games but I agree you might have issues if you play 2/4 or 3/6 because you will be short on $1's (i.e. $100 chips) with your current breakdowns. If you set it up for more like a Foxwoods schedule tourneys (i.e. 25/50 starting blinds) than you'd be heavy in $25's & $100's and be better off for 25¢ cash games but might be less appealing for penny ante games (5¢/10¢). You may need a few more $100's to cover this concern and you'd probably have plenty of time to add on later if this became more of an issue. There's nothing wrong with using $5 chips in 2/4 & 3/6 and it certainly limits the amount of $1 chips needed. Again if you structured your tourenys differently you could use the 1/100th of face better perhaps. Someone mentioned that they feel icky using $100 chips as $1's but I don't at least not anymore than using a chip w/ no denoms.
Here's a thread on the subject
Some more reading...
BREAKDOWN THREADS
Here's are some links with some options...
Breakdown Thread 1
Breakdown Thread 2
Breakdown Thread 3
Breakdown Thread 4
Suits group buy discussed breakdowns - alot of pages but I think there was some good info there.
FWIW - Here's my breakdown...
$1 x 200
$5 x 325
$25 x 275
$100 x 125
$500 x 75
Tourneys run homepokertourney style so heavy in the 5's & 25's as opposed to a Foxwoods structure where I'd go heavy in the 25's & 100's.
For most cash games the $25's are 25¢ and the $1 & $5's are face.
For lower limits the values are 1/100 of face.
Maybe either here (custom paulsons group buy) or another group buy they'll do a non-denom you could add to cover various situations.

Fins,
Great post! Thanks for taking the time to compile all the links. I've read a few and now I'm thinking that I may only want to use my denominated chips for cash games, and my non-denom faux clays for tourneys. The only downside to this is that tourneys seem to be more popular with my guests and so I will have less opportunity to use the "good" chips this way. But then I'll have to cart around both sets when I take my "poker road show" to a friends house. . .arrrgh, why do I make things so complicated for myself?

Nothing wrong with having tourneys using cash game values (maybe T100-T500)... alot of folks do this. Could still use the faux's for those messy heavy drink' throw downs.

Cash side games are good too so it's probably worth carrying both.
FWIW - here's some chip case options...
2000 chip case review - there other versions linked in the thread.
Also, you've probably seen this thread already but gives another option or two.
