Chip Theft?

Posted Wed Mar 02, 2005 1:42 am GMT by R Deckard
Have any of you with the more "expensive" chips (i.e. > $0.50/chip) ever had a few of them stolen by players in your home game? I know I'm being a bit paranoid, but I'm thinking of buying my first "expensive" set (the Paulson JBs) and I think it's not too far-fetched that someone might fancy pocketing a few, like in a tourney where they have no cash value, or in a low-stakes game, where the $25 might be worth only $0.25 in cash. Of course, I trust my friends and relatives, but when they bring their friends or aquaintances to join in the game, this might be more of a concern, no? Your thoughts and experiences are appreciated.

Get a cheap set for your Tourneys and leave the nice chips for cash
games. If people decide not to turn in a red or green chip it jsut cost them ther own money. People are not going to keep $5 and $25 chips at the end of the night.

Well, I'm not a high-roller and those $5 and $25 chips are only going to be worth $0.05 and $0.25 in cash value (using the divide-by-100 denomination trick), since the cash games I play are usually $1/$2 Limit or 0.25/0.50 NL. So it seems like a bargain to pocket a dollar's worth of chip for only a nickel or quarter spent.

As for tourneys, I already have a set of faux clays on order that I plan to use until I get my "expensive" set. But if I use the "expensive" set only for cash games, it seems a waste, since most of the home game action these days is usually tournament, with just a bit of cash game action on the side for the busted-out folks.

This is what I do.

I'm more concerened about the converse, someone taking a commonly available chip from outside and "running it in" to my game.

I just make it a rule to never use a chip whose actual cost to me exceeds it's denomination value. Fortunately I did stumble upon all you kind folks and this forum when Dennis at TR King was stuck with that Casbah Club order, so that enabled be to get some decent 25¢ chips for a quarter apiece. Were it not the case, I'd probably use something like the Nexgens with a label for a 25¢ chip. As far as I'm concerned, all of my chips don't have to match (i.e. be of the same type across the board, after all, casinos don't necessarily use the same manufacturer's chip for every one of their denominations either; though I do manage to have the same type for each denomination.)

Wow, I guess you guys (Mr. Meaner, MeridianFC) must have serious, "normal" stakes (i.e. "$5" means five dollars, "$25" means twenty-five dollars, etc.) cash games if chips running into your game is more of a concern than chips walking out of it (actuallly, Mr. M, with your sweet poker room, I guess I'd be surprised if you were only hosting penny games Wink). But when you're a middle-class slob like me hosting a micro-limit game for newbs, it wouldn't make sense for someone to buy a few "$25" or "$100" Paulson JBs for ninety cents (plus S&H) just to get a few extra quarters or bucks at the end of the night (and cause mass confusion).

My normal buy in for a ring game is $50 with unlimited rebuys. with a full table that puts $500-$1000 in play on any given night. Certainly not high stakes by any stretch, but not chump change (for me) either. I have .25/$1/$5/$25 chips in play. I won't cash any chip higher than $25, so my tourney set features values $100 and greater and is also completey different and cheaper than my cash game set. Someday I'll probably get a nicer clay/ceramic set for tourney play, just because I like nice cheques, but I won't have the same one or same values for cash/tourney.

Thanks for the compliments Deckard!! We use $1 $5 and $25's at face value. Although I don't play much in the pot limit omaha games we have. One table we play NL, PL holdem & pineapple and limit Omaha games. Our other table plays mostly pot limt dealers choice games. We usually have 2 racks of whites, 3 racks or reds and 1-2 racks of greens in play.

I did come up short last night one red chip. I am sure someone put it in there pocket but will bring it back
