For those who play .25/.50, .50/$1 NLHE what are your experiences with having a few denominations (2) or having more (3-4) when playing. do you like to play with less or more denominations. i ask because at the moment we play with $25 chips as .25 and $100 chips as $1 etc and i am thinking of increasing my set to include .25, .50, $1, $5. I am wondering if having many denoms in play gets to be a bit confusing or slower etc.

I kinda think the $0.50 chips are uneccessary, to be honest. I bought some for my set (Desert Sands) because I liked the design a lot, but I could definitely manage without them. It's nice to see more than two colors in the pot, but if they aren't sliding across the table towards you, I don't think you'll much care.

Keep the denoms to a minimum. The only reason to have higher denoms is to cover larger games and re-buys. I do like to give folks lots of chips to start with, hey it feels nice to have some stacks in front of you (if only for a little while), but you also want a manageable number in total. If you're on a budget you can get fewer chips too. I'd never buy less than 500 and you almost never will need more than 1,000 unless you have over two tables worth of folks.
My starting stacks are (.25/.50 NL, $50 buy in spread limit $5 max. etc):
20 x .25
20 x $1
5 x $5
That's 450 chips for a table of 10, plus more for rebuys which is where I break out the higher denoms. I don't cash any chips above $25.
I also do 1/2 hold 'em or whatever :
40 x $1
2 x $5
That's 420 chips for a table of 10, plus more for rebuys.
I have 1,000 cheques and only have 4 colors for all the games I play.

It's rare to have more than two or three kinds of chips in play at once...the variety of chips just gives more options on what kinds of limits you can play.

thanks for all of the opinions, i personally like using 2 values for live games i was just having crazy thoughts of getting ALL the different denoms to have a "complete" set...but that, i know, whould make things a bit difficult. damnit why did nj have to come out with a 'limited' $5000 chip. thats what started all this nonsense in my head.

Hahaha, I was the same way about my NJs (ceramics), I wanted a full set, even though I didn't like the Pink $0.25. But, with the NJ clays, the $0.25 and $0.25 are kinda dull, so I wouldn't worry too much about them.
And when did NJ come out w/ a $5000 chip?!?!?!?!? Must see must see must see.

Holy.
Crap.
That's awesome.
Damnit, I know I'm never going to be able to resist the temptation to get a set of the clays.

The only thing I don't like is that they are charging twice the price for this chip. I know it is limited edition, but TWICE the price, come on! I think it would be fair to offer it to past customers for a cheaper price, kinda like a customer appreciation discount.

Well, the only had 5000 manufactured, so I'm sure they're gonna lose their ass if they charge less.

I seriously doubt they would be losing that much money if they offered it slightly cheaper than 2.50 a chip. They already have a the mold, so I am pretty sure they got a pretty good deal from BC. Not to mention that this was for a private customer. So, can I request a certain denomintation then and have them sell off the rest for that cost? I only bring this up since I own over 400 of their chips and think it is a bit much for an overstock of chips for a private customer.

Unless you've got money burning a hole in your pocket, or you're running low on chips for your games, I'd be inclined to just continue to use the $25 and $100 chips the way that you're using them now. But then my personal philosophy is to never pay more for a chip than it's denominated value, and these days it's pretty tough to get a quality chip for less than 25¢ . My best investment was a rack of 25¢ chips from a Reno casino many years ago, Paulson H&Cs hotstamped, and back then solid colored Paulson chips sold for $35/100, though I'm sure the casinos paid much less than that for them.
I'd also agree that you don't need 50¢ chips any more than you would need $50 chips. The normal breakdown of 1-5-25-100-500 seems to work well in most cases. The only time you see chips like $2/3/4 chips would be in the poker rooms of a casino to facilitate 4/8 6/12 and 8/16 limit games, or things like $8 commemorative chips for things like the Lunar New Year since multiples of 4 are supposed to be lucky numbers in the Chinese culture.

Wow, $35/100 Paulson chips. Man, I wish I was into chips like I am now back then. It would've been nice to grab up chips when they were cheaper, lol.

That was retail over the counter from a retail store that sold to cardrooms. It was over 20 years ago, and they probably wouldn't appeal to most people now since they're solid color chips, no edge spots. Back then, $35/100 was a lot for chips. Though given the cost of solid color chips from TR King right now at $50/100, I wouldn't imagine that they would be much more if Paulson were still selling chips retail.

You're exactly right. I probably wouldn't mind the solid color Paulsons if the price was right. And, I didn't realize that was 20 years ago, lol, so 30 bucks for 100 chips was probably considered slightly expensive. I think it's pretty good right now that Paulsons has started selling again, I just hope things stay the way they are in the poker world so we may be able to see other styles released by them.

Be careful saying multiples... While "8" means wealth in Chinese, "4" means death. I wouldn't play with $4 chips... not that I've ever seen one.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I must have misunderstood what one of my colleagues of Asian descent was telling me about 4, I thought it had to do with multiples of 4.
And now that you mention it, the chips are usually 1, 2, 3, 5. I think the only place I've seen $4 chips at was Binion's Horseshoe in Vegas.

Yeah I know, I just got a little crazy when i saw the nj $5000 chip. visions of owning all of the nj clay denominations came swirling inside me head.
The foolish thoughts have passed now...everythings back to normal. I really wanted to get a different mold for my live games anyways so i'd have some variety. just waiting for the right chips that include .25 and another tourney win so i can fund them.

breakbeat, just out of curiousity: do the NJ clays get "stickier" with time? I got a sample set of 25 and after a few days of shuffling they're kinda slick. Thanks.
Posted Tue Mar 08, 2005 10:06 pm GMT by breakbeat46
When i first got them they felt 'chalky' and 'slick'. Granted I dont use them as much as I want to due to being a new dad but I've used them for about 40 hours now and they are getting less 'chalky' and less 'slick'. Right now they kinda still feel rough when shuffling them. I think the more dirty sweaty beer stained hands touch them the better they will get.
Posted Tue Mar 08, 2005 10:18 pm GMT by yeltzen
Okay, that makes sense.
I know I'm gonna end up getting them. I think they're the best looking clay around, so it'll be hard for me not to. Just the slickness had me a little worried, although it really isn't that big of a deal.
