Custom Set, how many chips get made? Future value? |

Hello Everyone,
I have been lurking and learning here for a while. Lots of great info here!!
I started out thinking that I really wanted to buy a playable set of chips from a real casino. My thinking was that I wanted something that was unique and looked good. I like the looks of the classic clay chips from many of the old casinos on the Las Vegas strip. I figured if I buy a set of chips from a real casino they would hold their value well.
I like the idea of having the chip more limited than a common Home Poker chip and I am willing to pay for this. However I'm not so sure that I want to pay $3-$5/chip for a set of casino played chips on e-bay. For this reason I have since become more and more intrigued with the idea of getting in on one of these group buys or possibly doing a custom chip design myself.
I noticed that the group buy on the Chipco Egyptians is now for sale all over the internet. Why is this? Will this always be the case? Is each group buy/custom chip different? I know that I would not be getting a custom chip to get a highly sought after collectable chip, but I can't help but think that the chips would hold their value better if there were not so many made.
I know that I can contact manufacturers to find out details on this, but what have others experienced in this regard.
Also, how well will these custom chips hold their value? Say I pay roughly $1/chip for a nice clay chip, will I be able to sell it a few yrs later without taking too much of a hit?

I did that for many reasons. One was protection for the buyers. On my first group buy, I handled it all myself, and about half of the people that were early adopters dropped out, for rear of sending cash to a stranger. Some used escrow, but it has a fee and is a tad messy.
For the second buy, I offered it to a retailer to handle the orders. This protected buyers by allowing credit card sales, and returnable product. This was the EXPLOSION that that group buy needed. Many many times more people bought them once they had ease of buying and purchase protection.
The retailer benefits by making a profit on the chips once the group buy is over. This is currently limited to 12 months on my Egyptian Chipcos. I will most likely be doing the same thing for the group buy, since it offers the buyers peace of mind. (Plus, I really don't want to take orders and ship that many chips!)
Each group buy is different. The one sponsored by this board is being run successfully by a group member taking orders on his own. It's really up to whoever decides to organize the buy.

From a poker chip perspective, I'd say we are in the "boom" time. If you are buying poker chips now with the hope that they will hold their value in the future, you'll probably be disappointed. In 5 years the current poker craze will have probably died down some and you'll probably see a glut of high end used sets on the market.

I think with the millions and millions of dice chips sold, poker will be in many family's for a long time. It always has been in many, but now it's more socially acceptable.
I think these unique chips we are buying will hold their value. Wishful thinking, maybe, but that's what I think.

I think that actual OBS chips from a casino will hold their value well, possibly go up as long as they're in decent shape.
I would expect customs to not retain their value as they are used since anyone can get their own customs made. However, they would probably go up in value if Chipco suddenly decided to go the Paulson route and stop selling to the public.

I thought that this would be your answer.
I have been thinking about your various answers to the holding value? I guess that in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter that much if they do or don't hold their value. What is $500 or $1000 in the course of a lifetime? So with this thought in mind, I guess I don't really care that much how well they hold their value.
I am not really all that concerned in the security issue as I play with the same group of guys almost exclusively and if anyone was cheating they would be gone, anyway it just isn't going to happen.
Ten, I think you did a really nice job with the Chipco Egyptians. Even though I am partial to the more classic looking chips I got a sample of these anyway.
I think that it would be so much cooler to have a set that no one else is going to have so I will keep watching for future group buys.
I will continue in my quest for the perfect set.

Exactly right. I made my Egyptian set for ME. A lot of people liked it and asked to get some, so that helped me get the cost down. A group buy was born.
If the group buy didnt happen, I would have paid over $2000 for my set ($1000 in art costs). And I didnt care. The group buy was a bonus. The fact that they are being sold retail for a while is no big deal. Out of the millions of other types of chips sold, am I likely to run into another guy that has my chips? Not very likely.
