Not sure if this has been beaten to death or not. I have some feed back throughout different threads but would like to take a vote.

I like the skulls better, the design is really nice and looks great at home games.

I don't care for either one, actually. If forced to choose, I'd go skulls. I'm not crazy about the design of the skulls, but it's more interesting than sands...I'm not a big fan of fake casino chips.

The edge spots are better on sands, but I don't like how the spots don't line up from the face to the edge. If the spots aren't going to line up, why bother pretend that they're normal edge spots and put them on the face?

Sands.

I don't dislike either, but like the Sands more.

I have a set of both. Same exact chip, of course, just different designs.
The Skulls are my first and favorite. They eliminated the problem of getting edge spots to line up by not having any on the face to line up with. The "blurriness" that everyone talks about is very over-stated. You will not notice it at all unless you hold the chip 2 inches from your face. I like the multi-colored edge spots on the Sands, but I like the old west look and feel of the Skulls. The skulls do not work well in cash games. They just look out of place. The Sands are good for these. The Skulls were made for tournament play.

Why do you feel this way? I can see where you are going but could you elaborate.

I am needing a 1000+ set for a cash set. This is why I am asking. I am leaning to the sands because of the classic look, I don't think that the edgespots would bother me not lining up. Its either different colored edgespots that don't line up or the same gold edgespot that has no alignment problem. I think I like different colors.

i've never figured out why people care so much about the edge spots lining up.

I don't mean that you can't use the Skulls for cash games. I mean, they "work" the same way. But the Sands look more casino-like, so when I look at them I feel like I'm in a cash game. The Skull chips just have a unique look to them when they're stacked up - like something a casino would only bring out for their big yearly tournament. Maybe I'm just weird.

Not wierd, I kind of agree, the sands look like a typical ring game chip.

I got in on the group buy for the sands I got 500 for $200 (arguably the best .40 cent chip one could find). I like the skulls appearance and was going to pull the trigger on a set but that weekend sale came and I couldn't sleep on that. The sands however are starting to grow on me. IMHO the animated type labels and chips have that fun factor but when you are really gettin down playin some poker a little less flash adds some class to the experience. As far these being "fake casino chips" that's cool they complement well with my fake casino table, fake casino chairs, waitresses, dealers etc.

Sands. Pretty classy design, though it'd look better on clay.

I know they're popular amongst many here but I do not like the skulls at all.

I agree with what yeltzen said about the skulls chip...the edge spots aren't represented at all on the front of the chip, so you don't have to worry about them lining up. I wish more ceramic chips did this.

Perhaps I should have said fantasy chips instead of fake casino chips. I meant fake as in the casino doesn't exist, and perhaps never existed. I'm not sure if the sands chips are a homage to a closed casino or what. Chips like this just don't do it for me, but if they work for you, that's just ducky. :D

I hate the skulls. I wish they'd burn every last one of them!

I got you. I'm real new I actually just found out what you guys mean by "fantasy". These chips do it for me just cause I don't know any better. It would probably be best if I stay away from getting better chip samples cause then I might understand the difference which is good to know but bad on the wallet. Hell I already feel like a poser because I have built my own holdem table and bought some nice chips and I'm still a newb. Embarassed

I think they Sands is a better looking chip. I do like the skulls as well. However because of the edge spots not lining up on the sands I am going with skulls myself.

Edge spots wearing down!?!? I have no clue what he's talking about.
My Skulls have been used for several months now and there's no visible wear on the chip whatsoever... so I dunno what he means by that. The Sands are the same chip so there should be no difference.

The skulls dont do it,im talking about the edge spots. The edge spots on the top part of the sands wear down.I have 25 100's and the yellow part rubs off on several of the chips. The skulls however have no visable wear and are excellent chips.

Okay, well I have 60 Desert Sands $100 chips that have been used in several tournaments and are shuffled daily by myself, and there is no wear whatsoever on them. The only way I have found you can damage an NJ chip is to throw it on concrete or rub an edge against the face really hard.

I'm going to add my two cents.

People seem to either really like the NJ skull logo or really don't.

I personally like it. If thats the case than I think it comes down to a case of if you are an edgespot guy or a logo guy. The Desert Sands have the better edgespots and look more like traditional chips, the Skulls have a cooler logo

I actually voted NJ skulls, even though I just bought the Desert sands. I came to that decision on two basis.

1.) Group buy price of .40 is just a rediculous deal for those chips

2.) There was a $1000 chip in the Desert Sands. I went with a $25, 100, 500 and 1000 combination ($.25, 1.00, 5, 10 actual value for games) The 50 1000 I ordered will be useful in the higher end games I play in so we wont have to change cash to chips as often.
