Heads Up Play, (Very Long) |

I have a question about heads up play.
I seem to be a good enough player vs my friends to make it to the end. with a chip lead or being average chip stack, when playing vs. my loose/amatuer/ friends when the table has 4-8+ people.
As the table goes down to 3 and then 2..(Im usually in the final 2 or atleast 3) I start to have times when im not certain on what to do.
Basically im talking about heads up vs. loose opponents.(my friends who just play without trying to learn how to get better)
I know about using position and being agressive and bluffing is key but no matter what i do my friends play so weird im always stumped.
Ill raise pre-flop on the button with lets say 7 8 ... Player A calls. some scare cards with come up K 6 10 ... Player A checks Ill try and bluff sometimes on the button when they check, and they almost always call. Then the next round a K comes up. im not sure if i should keep trying because they may have me beat and i know sometimes i have their hand beat since they almost always call.
They bet small, I raise, they call.
Finally on the river an innocent 2 comes up....
Player A may bet big or even go all-in.
I am always feeling his nothing will beat mine.
Then he predictly puts his cards in the deck like EVERYTIME he bluffs. ( he shows his cards almost always when he has a good hand)
and this is a kinda person whos capable of being the Village Idiot who would not take into though his consistancy of actions. 8)
And I know very loose players are Really Hard to bluff at a full table but the same at heads up.
The problem is... at my friend's tournaments we only have $5.00 in chips and even at the end any bluff will take a huge hit outta you if u get caught. They are tough to bully with a big stack and when u get called enough u wont be the big stack. In order for them to even think about folding you would have to bet/raise a very large amount.
They play like i have nothing every time...
Then ill catch a set on the flop and play like i did every other time and they just check it and dont try and bluff me.
Hard to Explain... im sure some of you have played home games against your friends...
HELP!!

I certainly recommend you read all you can, but I emphaisize Theory of Poker in particular because it will really elevate many aspects of your game, including heads up play.

play slower then them. The heads up game you read about everywhere isn't FOR these opponents. If you have a chip lead, surrender a few blinds for a while and only make moves with hands, let your opponent gather momentum, then use it to trip him up when you catch. Change pace - you need to have a flux when you play HU - don't play the same sort of hand from the same position the same twice in a row.

IF PEOPLE CAN'T BE BLUFFED, DON'T TRY!

K, you write in your post that you hit a set and your friends check. No need to wait for sets heads up with pocket pairs. Odds are heads up, pocket pair is a monster, take it down preflop, make them pay for draws. If you hit something bet it, if you think your friend is not hitting, bet it. If you want to check for a bluff, raise. If you think you are beat - fold. Any blind stolen is good, you got a good hand preflop put your opponent to the wall. Sometimes call and stay on his behind, make him sweat, he checks you put out a bet and check what he does. Train yourself in doing things quick and instintively, read up on typical tells and make sure you don't have them. Tighten up on all-ins and calling all-ins, all-ins are where the takedown is gonna happen, and all you want to do is trap people. A pair is often a good hand, even with a lousy kicker. You wanna play really aggressive you disregard one scare card on the flop or bet scare cards.
If the chips out mean one or two losses puts you in a hopeless situation, it's just coinflips anyway, steal and all-in.
Then again is just my humble opinion
