What is the proper amount of chips to buy? |

i'm looking into buying a new set of Nevada Jacks (http://www.nevadajacks.net/mall/desert_sands.htm) and was curious... what are the normal amound of chips to get for a set.. i know you have to have at least 500 chips but how many of each demon would be best... right now.. i usually play cash games with a 15$ buy in with table at usually 10 player with most people buying in two to three times...i was thinking of going... 400 X .25...200 X .50... 200 X 1$... that'd give roughly 600$ available in chips and maybe in a while as the stakes we play for start to go up purchase a small add on of 5$ and 25$ chips...
now is this too many low end chips?... should i just be maybe concentrating on getting like 200 of each denom or something like that....

I always wonder about this.
Not the question in the post but rather....
Why go for numbered chips at all?
Surely better to by 3 colours of unnumbered and then assign values to them as you go along?
I mean sure at first the slower members of your group will be all befuddled and asking "how much are the red chips worth again?"
But this would pass i am sure as everyone got used to them.
Not only would you be able to use them for cash games as say .25c .50c and $1 or whatever, but you would be able to change the values if your game becomes higher stakes.
And say you decide to have a tourney one night, you just assign values, 10/25/100 to start and then as the blinds increase you can colour up and take out the "10" chips and make them "500" chips instead.
Or am i just being mental?

no you're not mental at all.. I always thought the same way myself.. i guess i was just fooling myself when i fell in love with a certain set of nevada jacks.. unfortunately they're labelled... but even if I was to buy a set of unnumbered chips... how many of each of the three colours should i get?... i was thinking for a beginners set of 500 even just get two colours and go 300/200 of each colour.. no matter what stakes you play for, for a 10 player game there's more than enough chips to go around...

I, too, love the flexibility of non-denom'ed chips. But it seems that our choices in non-denom'ed, standard stock clay chips are very limited (are you listening, Mr. Big-Chip-Company Marketeer?). If Paulson or NJ came out with a non-denom'ed clay, I probably would get them instead of the JBs. At least the "$" on the JBs is small, so you can more easily think of the number as cents vs. dollars for small-stakes.

Unfortunately, I've found that this issue never seems to pass. I even post a color chart on the table, and still the same people ask the same question (along with the usual "Oh, it's my turn?", "can I raise?", "can I fold?", etc.). The color thing is a difficult concept to grasp for some people, apparently. Actually, for this reason, I think I will not mind trading flexibility for less confusion. . . but I'm still expecting that when I do the "divide-by-100" thing it will cause confusion again ("Uhh, wait, which is it again? The black is one dollar or a hundred dollars?"). . .*sigh*

Thanks guys, appreciate the kudos... there's alot of great contributors here, I just try to keep up
