Paying too much to define a hand

Had a good session at the Trop on Saturday night, but I leaked a few bets at the end. This situation came up at in a fairly tight 6/12 game. I think I know where I slipped up, but I'd like other eyes on it.

I get AHeartKClub in MP. UTG folds, UTG+1 limps, I raise, folds around to the SB who 3-bets, BB folds, UTG+1 calls 2 bets, and I cap. Both players call. Flop comes small rags with 2 hearts. SB leads out, UTG+1 folds and I raise. SB 3-bets, and I have no choice but to throw my hand away.

As soon as the hand was over, I *knew* the cap preflop was a bad idea. I gained absolutely no other information by closing the betting, and still had to raise the flop to find out where I was. Turns out SB had AA and I was drawing near dead.

Would I have been better served simply calling the 3-bet preflop and then playing the flop the same way, or should I have read the flop lead better and folded straight off?

Hindsight is 20/20. Now that you know he had Aces your cap as not good. But i dont completely disagree with the cap in that situation. Its only one more bet and cant be reraised. It shows strength and if you just called then you show weakness. If he didnt have aces and say he had A,K then your bet on the flop would scream overpair. And he may have to lay down his A,K against your A,K. It turns out he had Aces but thats the risk you take. And you were able to lay it down easily when you knew you were beat.

I like the cap preflop too. If you're raising a strong hand in late, it makes sense to cap if 3 bet, even if you don't think you're still ahead. Say he has Jacks and a Q drops on the flop, you might be able to make him fold there.

The cap ain't necesarily bad... you didn't gain information, but you may have easily gained value, especially against the UTG+1 player who looks to be on the fishier/looser side of life.

The flop.... Sean? Did you really raise and fold to his 3bet? Let me know when you make that trip to Canterbury so I can go up there and smack you.

If you saw he had AA, folding is fine. If not, the way this played out I think you are absolutely nuts for not seeing the turn.

Ok, you caught me. I was a little embarrassed because I called it with what amounted to a backdoor flush draw, and then folded to the turn bet when I got no help.

I was gonna keep that as my own little dark secret, but I should've known better. Laughing
