Is this normal

Posted Tue Mar 15, 2005 3:35 pm GMT by badvb750
The casino I play at now charges $5 dollars an hour for the NL games. All, the limit games have a normal rake. So, is this normal to charge NL players a fee to play? Seems like it would be a lot harder to beat the game.

5$ an hour plus rake? or just a session fee of $5 an hour? Because if its just the session fee then it is better than a rake.

It's called a time charge. It's an alternative to the rake and it's not that uncommon. The $10/$20 limit game at the Tropicana in AC is a time charge game ($5 on each dealer change). Whether or not you prefer that structure is probably dependent on how good you're running that day. If you're dragging a lot of pots, the time charge is good. If not, then you're paying rake even if you never enter a pot.

I've never seen a game with both a time charge and a rake, and if I did, I wouldn't sit down.

No, the NL is a time charge. The limit games are just a rake with no time charge.

Well, that makes sense. I've heard dealers (at the Trop anyway) mention that the house doesn't make as much on the raked NL games as they do on the limit games. With an uncontested preflop raise stealing the blinds, there's no rake at all, and the rake on the few big pots you might see in a session are still going to be capped at a certain level.

the house is getting less. More money on the table.

for example
30 hands in one hour at $5 rake is $150 for the casino

$5 per person per hour is $50 for the casino.

Plus ive seen many places that is $5 per half hour, or more depending on the limit.

sure if you dont win a pot in the hour you are paying 5 bucks for no return. But when you win 3 pots in the hour you are paying 5 instead of 15.

Because you'd pay it once when you sat down, and after you won your first 2 pots or so, you'd be playing free the rest of the night.

Seems like the hourly fee is a double edged sword. If you are running good all night then you make out. But, if you are getting suckouted and not hitting your flops the fee can just add insult to injury.
