Need your feedback - Copag Cards |
|
Posted Sun Mar 20, 2005 3:18 pm GMT by pokerchipreviews
I received some Copags from one of my vendors last week. I'm working on the review that I'll put us this evening...but I wanted to get some of your feedback. Like them? Don't? Why in either case.
Over the past week, I have developed a very strong opinion of these cards through my own use and by loaning them out to other card players to get their feedback. I'm still looking for additional points of views.
To add: The sample I got was the "1546 Style Poker Size"
Many thanks,
John

I'm a big fan of Copag's...specifically the "Copag" style Copag's. I'm not as impressed with "1546" style as I have noted differences between the two that I discussed in this post:
http://www.texasholdem-poker.com/forum/t9524/another-copag-vs-kem-thread-but
In short, the 1546 feels flimsier than the "Copag" styled cards and also feels slicker

The 2 decks I own have been used at my home game every week since December. My games last about 4-5 hours, so that is a total of a little over 50 hours of play. I really like them and will probably always order them from now on. The deck feels a little different than my KEM Arrows, but it is hard for me to describe the difference. Maybe thinner?? A downfall to the Copag's to me is that the color's on the face of the card are very light and aren't as attractive. This is not much of an issue, though.
My deck of KEMS after about 3-4 months of use have a pretty significant upwards bend to them, this has not happened with the Copag's. It is really a toss up between the two in my opinion, but since KEM cards do not seem to have there crap together right now, I would choose KEM over Copag. If both were priced the same, then I'm not sure what I would do.

I definitely prefer Copag to Kem but Dal Negro over Copag. Copag basically sits right between the two on a lot of points.
Copag is thicker than Kem, thinner than DN.
Stiffer than Kem, not as stiff as DN.
Copag is grippier than Kem, not as much as DN.
The print and colors on Copag, I think, are much nicer than Kem - more flat/better depth. But again, DN takes all the color quality a step further.
I doubt many will agree with me on all this...
I would rate Copag Elite design 9+ out of 10.
Kem would be 8 in general.
DN Freedoms are an easy 10 for me.

i prefer my kems to my copags. i just got a set of the exports.
they're great cartds and, in my opinion, a great alternative to kems, but if you can afford kems, i say get them instead of copags. my kems seem to shuffle easier than the copags.
all in all, though, i'm quite happy with the copags.

I have four decks of copags and love them all...of course I have been playing with this brand for some time. I played the other night with some kems and just was not crazy about them. I am sure they are great and would be singing their praises had I been playing with them for a time instead of the copags.
Yoiu know, it all comes down to what you like and are comfortable with the most.

OK...so thanks for the feedback.
Here's what myself and the folks I loaned the decks out to experienced: They are unplayably slick. These 2 deck of cards are by far the worst decks of cards I've ever used. This same opinion is shared by several co-workers to took the decks home on difference nights to use them. I had a small poker game last night at the house and everyone in attendance was like WTF!? with these cards.
The cards are so slick, that when simply setting them down for a 'cut', they spread out all over the place. They are very difficult to shuffle...without a fierce amount of concentration...or they go all over the place. I've not played with DN, but I've played with a variety of KEMS and have not experienced anything remotely like this. I've never played with any cards that were even *remotely* this slick.
I'm going to contact the vendor and talk with them prior to putting the review up. Maybe they can send me a different set or kind of Copag that's better. Who knows. Pretty strange.
Thanks for your help,
John

John,
Please get/request the "Copag" style cards. I'd be very interested to see your take on these cards vs. Kem's, Dal Negro's, and even the 1546 Copag's.

Yeltzy,
Soooooo...do you PLAY cards? I mean, they are kinda the most important part of the game as far as 'supplies' go. If you can't easily handle/shuffle/deal/cut the cards, it tends to be a downer for the whole evening. If a $.50 deck of cards is easier and more fun to play with than a $6.00 deck of cards...then folks should know about it.
Uranium...no....important part of your joyous poker/whatever-card-game-you-play evening....yes.
Cheers,
John

Come on Yeltzen...if the cards, chips, poker tables and other accessories didn't matter this forum sub-topic would not exist.
You are the owner of NJ Skulls (Great chips by the way and thanks for the advice) and interested in buying NJ Clays so I would expect you to appreciate (even if it's not your thing) some debating/discussing of different types of playing cards. After all, you could play poker with Bicycle chips.
I use to buy a new deck of paper cards before every poker night ($2 - $3/deck at a local store), but I spent $15 on these http://www.chessset.com/copagsignature.html
...3 months ago and have played atleast ten 6 - 8 hour poker seessions and the cards are still in mint condition. It's actually a cheaper alternative than paper in the long run.

Myself and most people I know find the Bridge sized Copag's to be a bit unmanagable until you've shuffled them for a while. I still prefer my poker sized Copag's I just got, but the diamond back is kinda blah compared to the neat pattern my bridge sized ones have.
I haven't played with Kems or DN, but I really like my Copag's.

Unless I'm missing something, I don't think Copag is still making the "Copag" cards. I didn't see them on the Copag website.

I think there's a big difference in arguing over a $500 investment than a $25 investment. But whatever. I like my computer printed cards.

If this is true, I may need to buy a couple of sets for future use.

I'm pretty sure Copag is still making cards. I mean they are popping up everywhere.
After this conversation I decided to sell my Bridge Copag's, sold in less than 5 minutes on our local Poker website to my surprise. I ordered a set of Poker Size Copag's in the case and all that. I have a pair of soft pack Copag's as well but don't care for the backs that much, so I'll keep them for tournament play and the nice ones for our home games.

They phased out/discountinued a number of the designs in their gold and silver lines. Such as the Persian style which is too bad, I think they are pretty.

I like my Copags better than the Kems they use at my local cardroom.
They started out a bit on the slick side, but that hasn't been a problem at all lately.

I'd have to agree that the Copaq seem to get less slick after some use. I really like them. Never played with Kem's, i think, but I've played with Dal negro, aswell as some other brands like Piatnik. I like the texture on the Copaq cards, they stand up well compared to the dal negros in my opinion. Great cards.

As far as quitting making cards, I don't think so. The English/US version of the Brazilian manufacturer's corporate web site is http://www.copagcards.com/ It's more an overview site and shows their various backs and styles. You can buy them at their various retailers (online and other) for the same price.
There is also a cardsbycopag.com site, but I think that's a retailer, not the manufacturer.

They just aren't making the "copag" back design anymore. Yes, they are still making lots of cards.

That's what I meant all. Sorry for the confusion.
So what is the story on the Gold/Silver lines? What differentiated them? I didn't see a refence to them on the Copag site either.
And where is a place to buy Dal Negros? The only one I can find other than Kardwell (which only has one style) is in England. I really like the all white Dal Negro set.

Try pokerchips.com for Dal Negro, they have 4 different styles.
As for Copags, I like them. However, I have never handled Kem or DN. I will admit they were extremely slick out of the box but after a few games they seem to loose some of that slickness.

The gold/silver reference is for retailers to use when ordering. For example, I can buy an entire case of Masters, Exports, etc - but they don't sell entire cases of the other designs like Persian, 4 Suits, Indian, etc. Those come in mixed cases of 2 of each design ( designated gold or silver) so if you want the beautiful Persians, you have to take the hideous Egrets, Ethnics, Mandalas, and so on. Hope that explains it.

I love some of their bridge designs, it's too bad that they don't have some of those in the poker size. I have the 1546 on order though in SI Poker Size, I like the look of those.
