Heads Up Strategy?

Posted Mon Mar 21, 2005 8:44 pm GMT by ALEN-TNT
Does anyone have any heads up strategy for me. I do pretty good when there is 4 or 5 hands but when there 2 hands I do pretty bad. Does anyone have any strategy for Texas Holdem for the final 2 players. Thanks.

One tip: Raise every pot and then bet the flop regardless.

Another Tip: Change gears after a little while and start limping with any connecting cards........try to make a hand...but if you miss......always take a stab at the pot on the turn.

I assuming you're talking about tourneys here...

Rule #1 - Be aggressive.
Rule #2 - Be aggressive.
Rule #3 - Be aggressive.

I'm not talking about going all-in every hand or anything, because you're bound to get burned doing that. However, pot sized bets are good. The idea is to always keep your opponent on making a decision. At the point in the tourney when you are heads up, forcing your opponent into a decision is far stronger than checking through and giving free cards. When the blinds are so high, even the most marginal of hands aren't so marginal. Also, late in the tourney, the blinds are worth stealing.

If he raises back at you, he may have something decent. You have to use your discretion and past information to decide then, but don't throw chips in on a losing proposition when you know you're beat. (That may seem obvious, but the pots get pretty big and tempting when you're heads up and you need to let the loser go...)

I dunno... maybe I'm talking right out of my bum, but this is how I play and I place 1st or 2nd in almost every SNG I play...(5 out of 7 or so)

Good luck to you..

Always be betting. Make him make the tough calls. If you think your beat on a certain hand dont feel bad about laying it down but come back agressively on the next hand. You do not have to bet because of the cards you have, bet on what the other guy probably doesnt have.

Raise or fold. Never call.

All this advice previous posted is both awesome and horrible.

The thing is, heads up is an intimate encounter between two card players. This is where you REALLY work on your opponent: not so much his cards, but the man/woman. Therefore a specific tactic won't work with everyone.

Read your opponent as best you can. How has he previously been playing? Is he tight? Did he just get tighter? lower your hand selection a bit and be a bit more aggressive.

Is he loose/passive? That's a calling station: Check your draws and rape him when you make them. Aggression and semi bluffs work quite well also.

Is he loose/aggressive? Be willing to fold your cards away if they're trash. But also make sure to put these guys to really tough decisions. Many of them are pansies and think overaggression is the key.

Personally, and this is a bit backwards, I'm 'ok' in 4+ handed tourney/NL, but I can be one hell of an opponent once the table thins down a bit. Tourney play is far different than cash play, though.

Oh yea, blind structure is also very important. If the blinds are high, you need to play with more aggression, if low then perhaps you can take your time and tighten up your hand selection.

Remember: Mix up your game and change gears when you think your opponent DOESN'T expect it. If you get busted on a couple bluffs that you played aggressively(or perhaps you had to lay down), what is your opponent thinking? What would you think in that situation? What's he expecting you to do? tighten up or loosen? Do the opposite...

Good luck to ya.

(PS I meant no offense by my first comment, good advice here Wink )

Great argument. How could I negate it?
You're really a helpful addition to this forum.

Actually, I couldn't recall which post I had to cut short when my boss walked into my office. It was this one, but when I returned I saw that Odin had pretty much summed it up and didn't want to be redundant. You're criticism is very helpful, as always, though. Thanks for the insight.

Actually, that's good poker overall, not just heads-up. Never isn't the right word, since never and always aren't good words to use in poker strategies.

However, it gets the point across...in other words, if your cards aren't good enough to raise with, think hard about whether or not you should be in the hand at all.

I agree. Like I said, I was going to expound on the statement when I got busted by the boss. Embarassed
When I got back to it, it had already been covered sufficiently by Odin.
"It depends", is the only statement that seems to always apply to poker. But it seems you got my point regarding the raise or fold comment.

Thank god I'm well hidden from my bosses. I only do forum stuff during the day (on the clock) because the nights are dedicated to poker Smile

Yeah, Odin's response was right on the money.

The word never is probably what triggered 1988 TR's poignant, if not verbose, reply. Technically, he was correct, just not very helpful. Wink

how i sucker people into my AA or KK hand heads up:

I always raise and am agressive in every hand heads up.
If i call i scream weakness to him and i find that over 70 percent of the time they reraise my call when im in the big blind. then i reraise him and 50 % of the time they reraise all in becoz they assume i have a crap hand becoz i called at first.

Disclaimer: this tactic is proving to be gold only in 20 dollar sngs an 20 dollar multis(or lower). Above that level my tactic is a bit falty becoz there are fewer horses asses at the table.

I love the disclaimer. Good tactic, though. I'll have to put that one to the test.

I like the basis of AAceman's strategy, but I'd like to add that you have to lead into it. Call a few times with crap, and then when they raise you, fold. That way when you do get your monster they don't even know what hit them.

I like to get guys into betting patterns. If I limp to his big blind and he raises me, I'll fold. Limp to him a couple more times and if he keeps raising you up, you have him set up for a good hit when you have a big hand.
