My question for you guys is why hasn't anyone ever had a group buy on custom nevada jack clays. In my opinion they are the best clay chip on the market(haven't handled the new paulsons yet) I've spoken with Jim the owner of NJs and he said a custom order can be done with as little as 5000 chips. The price at that amount is 1.25, but he mentioned the price could be reduced to $1 if more chips were involved. He also stressed that usually the inlays are the only changes made to the current nj mold, but sounded open to changing colors and edge spots. I just thought this might be a great option for some incredible chips.

That... is a really good question. I wasn't even aware that they offered this.
I'd love to do that, aside from the fact that I'm a horrible design person. Colors, I can handle... but I could never make an inlay and I think the NJ inlay is pretty cool as it is. Plus, I think it's pretty hard to get a bunch of people to agree on an inlay... I would want something totally unique and for me only, but then I'd have to pay a full price for it.
Interesting idea though. But they're NJ/Blue Chip... no one wants them except for the few of us here.

to sidestep for a moment.
Yeltzen did you ever end up deciding to order the NJ Clays? If you did, how long is it going to be before you get them?
Posted Tue Mar 22, 2005 9:20 pm GMT by yeltzen
I did order them this morning.
They'll be here on Thursday.
I held off quite a bit. My plan was to rush home yesterday and buy them immediately. But everyone had so many bad things to say. Finally, I just went with my gut; I love the chips, so I bought them.

Well, they aren't Paulsons... I just feel so inferior on this board now.

I ordered 1000 NJ clays about a month ago and they only took 2 days to get here (I'm in Chicago). I couldn't be happier with the quality of the chips , only 1 or 2 blemishes in the 1000 , no bent or warped chips.
I also ordered another 500 on Monday and they will be here tomorrow.
I used Mineral Oil to help them break in. I didn't use a rag but rubbed the oil into my hands and finger tips and then worked the oil into each chip then placed them out on paper towels on my table under a ceiling fan overnite to dry. This process took about 6 hours broken up into 2 days.
The oil worked wonders for the colors and the texture.
We play at least twice a week and have a 60 man tourny once a month so the chips have just started to break in and look great.
Before I ordered the NJ's I got a ton of samples from NJ,ASM,Blue Chip,Paulson,Chipco and a few others and really liked the NJ's the best.
I wasn't thrilled with price but I guess it could have been worse.
Anyone considering buying the NJ Clays now is the time to do it while they are on sale.
I'd post some pics but I can't figure out how to do it on the forum so if someone is willing to do it for me I can email the pics to them.

Awesome! Very reassuring to hear these things, even though I don't need any reassuring.
Has the "slickness" gone away as they've broken in? They start out really sticky out of the box, then get slick... does this stop?
Should I use mineral oil on the ones I've already broken in through shuffling, etc?
Posted Tue Mar 22, 2005 11:19 pm GMT by RMD928
The "slickness" is still there but isn't an issue. They still stack 40 high without falling over.
If you've broken them in by use you don't need to oil them.
I've got the original 25 I ordered as samples on my desk with many, many hours of shuffling, tricks on them and they never got the oil treatment and in my opinion the colors look deeper than on the ones I oiled. I believe they get better looking with use and the oil only helps the process and speeds it up a little.
Another issue I missed , In another post someone mentioned the different colors were different thickness'.
My green, black and yellow all stack to the same height but my purple seem to be about a 1/4 chip higher in stacks of 25 compared to the others.
I just ordered blue and red so I will compare the stack heights later.

Hey Yeltzen, would you like to do a NJ clay review for a new chip board? Objective, honest, serious review? Once you get them and have a little time to break them in of coruse. PM me if you want to, I'd appreciate it.

Boo on your chips. My $25's are thinner than my $100 and $1000. my purples are the thickest like yours. I ordered a few more chips of each den and will see if they have the same issues or not.
Posted Tue Mar 22, 2005 11:58 pm GMT by yeltzen
My greens and blacks are the exact same height at 20 high.
The reds and yellows are like 1/8 of a chip higher stacked 20 high.
The browns ($5000) are about 1/2 chip higher stacked 20 high.

If you guys are serious about this I would be willing to do the art work for free if you would like, I am not a professional, but I'm not bad. I could also mock-up some color and edge spot changes with some direction as to what you guys might want in a custom set.

Well, to be honest, I would not be interested in doing this for a group buy. If I were going to get custom clay chips, I would want them to be one of a kind for myself only. Plus, I just bought NJ clays, I can scarcely afford to buy more chips.

Its OK for an emergency spare but not my first choice.
I have 2 full size tables we use for most games but a friend brought that one over for a tourny we held last week.As people got eliminated they started a cash game and played on that one. It's made by "Pit Boss" and available at sporting good stores for about $200.

RMD, I use that same table in my weekly game and I like it for the cost. I need a portable table so I can store it in my bedroom and set it up in the living room for games, so for this I think it is a great option. The felt is a pretty ugly green though, but I think it could be easily replaced, and I have been thinking about doing so. I have used it weekly since December and it has held up nicely.

can you post a link to the manufacturer's site or a site where i can buy that foldable table?
is it the one with the wires underneath connecting the legs?

There you go. I bought mine at a local pool supply store. Looks like they are offered at Sports Authority and Dick's.

I have it also but I've only ever used it once for a couple of hours.
I was curious as to how its held up if you were using it regularly. I have a table that I've built but I keep the folding one as a backup table if I need another one along with an Octagon one.

So if I designed the inlay and color schemes they would be $1.10 a chip flat? No set-up fee, etc?
That rocks that they allow you to use the NEVADA mold. It'd rock even more if they let you choose colors and edgespot schemes.

Yeah, it sounded pretty good to me too. I didn’t ask about changing the edge spot colors be it seems like that wouldn’t be much of an issue. As far as the $1.10 - He said I would just have to supply them with my design and they would format it to fit the chips and that was it. I then I asked him again to clarify that there would be no charge for the reformatting and he said "no it's included in the $1.10 as long as I was provided the artwork". Most people can't but if you can do the art yourself it’s a great deal - especially if they will change the edge spot colors.

just came across this thread and it has thrown a serious wrench in my nj clay sale vs pharoahs clup paulsons group deal being arranged by tenpercenter...I prefer the colors and different edge spot arrangements of the nj clays but the custom picture in the paulsons...this could be the best choice for me...
I will give a scheme and inlay design a try as well and post them here...
Posted Wed Mar 23, 2005 7:26 pm GMT by yeltzen
I think you'd have a hell of a time trying to get everyone to agree on colors and inlay. The standard chips (which have a cool inlay already IMO) are cheaper than they would be in a custom group buy. The Pharoah's club chips have the advantage of using a new mold that people want as well as an inlay that is far and away better than the two stock inlays.
Posted Wed Mar 23, 2005 7:34 pm GMT by jdiesel
I can honestly say that this is the way to go if we can get the deal done sometime in the near future. I am in the process of designing some labels for another set of chips and in my opinion have found the best poker chip graphic out there. I would be interested in seeing what you guys think. I'm fexible on the wording and design and everything but I like the horse alot. It could say something like wild horse saloon or poker room or something. Just and idea.

Posted Wed Mar 23, 2005 7:36 pm GMT by yeltzen
Yeah see I don't really care for that and there's no way I would ever buy 5000 chips with my own design, so I really don't think an NJ group buy could pan out. Prove me wrong, I guess.

And some people were balking at my estimated .89 for our custom Paulsons? I am vindicated!

would anyone be interested in an asian-themed fantasy casino label...
attached are my custom nexgens...just to get an idea of the type...
I was thinking a calligraphy symbol in the middle, removing the marbled ring while keeping the circle of dragons and suits, and a casino name with/without denoms...simple, yet stylized and of the classic type...
if there are at least a couple of people who want to at least see a mock up...I will put in the coreldraw time and post a general mock up...I will rechoose colors to match the current nj clays...or perhaps different edge spot configs and colors as it seems jim is not opposed to this possibility...
anyone even a little interested?
(I will not take offense if people are not up for it...)

If were going to even consider selling my NJ clays for new custom NJ clays, they would have to use the same old-west theme of the originals. Yup I'm weird.

I actually have a great idea for a design for these chips, that would most likely apeal to most anyone. I have "ok" photoshop experience, but nothing crazy. I could work on something, we can perfect it together and maybe we could get a small group buy going.
circlencircle have you found out any more regarding edgespot colors? Also is the martini club mold design available? Oh and we can use different images for each chip correct?
I would personally want something like 1200+ chips. so that's roughly a quarter of what we need.

Sorry for the long delay... Umm actually I haven’t talked to them again at all. But if I remember correctly, someone posted in the last couple days that NJ told them they -would- change edge spot colors. I’m not interested in buying any right now but if I can help you guys with the mockups I'd be happy to. If you take a look at the "NJ Clay Mold" thread you'll see what I'm working with. Ignore the colors - they can be change in about 10min - the actual edge spot config/design can be changed also but those are the only three I have done so far.

Again, I just wanted to show you guys one other edge spot "configuration" I have on hand (i.e. this chip is 1/4" spots in three sets of two, where as the others I posted were 1/8" in four sets of three, four sets of two with a 1/8" gap between, and just four 1/8" spots); so if anyone wants to see the Nevada mold in any of these combinations but with different colors let me know and I'll make the mockup for you. BC will only do one other style (1/4" spots in four sets of two) and I am working on that design right now also.
Posted Sun Mar 27, 2005 4:00 pm GMT by yeltzen
What about the scheme they use on the $1000 NJ chips? Two 1/8" spots and two 3/8" (?) spots? Do they offer that for the customs?
I'd like to see red chips with either 4 1/4" black edgespots or the 2 1/8" black spots with the 1/8" inch gap between them.
Posted Sun Mar 27, 2005 4:04 pm GMT by yeltzen
Actually, is there any way you can just post solid color chips and I can just screw around with the spots meself?

Posted Sun Mar 27, 2005 8:49 pm GMT by yeltzen
That would be awesome.
All of the edgespot patterns look cool; I think NJ probably got the progression right, going from no edgespots to 1/8" ones, on up to the ones on the $1000 chip.

Wow very very nice.
Maybe on the $25 chip you could make the "samauri palace" text the same shade of blue as the edgespot? I dunno how that would look.
Damnit I wish I had the software for this stuff.
Will you be able to make a solid white chip?
