My Poker table and Dal Negro vs. Copag vs. Kem |

Here are a few pics of my poker table that was made by forum member JayHRC51. The pics have some glare because of the chip racks and are a little grainy but it's the best I got.
I've had 2 poker nights on the table and the players love it. In the pics I have 2 sets of Copag's, 1 set of Kem's and 1 set of Dal Negro's. I just got the Dal Negro's and played with them this past Saturday. The players thought these cards felt close to paper and they really liked them. This is my first time playing with poker sized plastic cards and I'm surprised to say that I prefer the bridge size. Contrary to some reports I've read, the Dal Negro full deck does not stack higher than the Copag and Kem decks...which makes me wonder about the reviews that show the Dal Negro's as thicker than the other plastic cards. I really like the feel of the Dal Negro's, but I would rate them just a hair behind the Copag styled Copag's because the bridge size feels more comfortable to me. The Copag's style Copag's have a great texture/feel like the Dal Negro's, but the Paisley Kem's and the 1546 Copag's both have a slicker feel. I would rank the 4 decks pictured in this order:
1) Copag style Copag's
2) Freedom Dal Negro's
3) Paisley Kem's
4) 1546 Copag's.

If you do get Copag's, look for the ones with "Copag" on the back (see blue and red decks pictured). The other 1546 Copag's that I have, I would rate below the Kem's and well below the Dal Negro's as they have the most slippery feel of the bunch.
I here that the Copag style may have been discountinued so I need to snatch a set or 2 up myself while I still can.

I disagree completely; I think Copags are -much- more slippery than Dal Negro. I also think DN is a much better card than Kem as well.

I'm willing to bet that you haven't played with the "Copag styled" Copag's (pictured above in blue and red). As I said, I agree that the 1546 Copag's are more slippery, BUT that's the not the case with the Copag style Copag's

Dal Negros didn't fair too well?
They came in 2nd just behind the Copags..and ahead of KEMs overall.
So how is that not fairing well?
I have sets of all 3 and the Copag and Dal Negro sets I have I favor well over the KEMs.

I think he mant they didnt fare to well in the bend test which I think is the most important test. I have yet to throw my cards against a wall.

They ranked #2 with Copag as #1 and Kem as #4. How can you say they didnt do well?
From the above link under "Final Report".
"A close second place goes to Dal Negro cards. The Dal Negro's never chipped, cracked or bent even after about 75 throws at a piece of plywood. No matter how hard I threw these cards, they were not damaged. The corners hardly even bent back a little, let alone chip. The card was completely playable after all my damage tests. There was a slight bend in one corner that could be felt but not seen and there was also a slight wrinkle in the middle from being folded in half. The wrinkle could not be seen. If it were not for this wrinkle, Dal Negro would have finished in first place rather than second place. Dal Negro cards have a papery, almost cardboard, feel to them. When they are bent, they take a little bit of 'repair' to get them back to a flat shape. They do not recover with almost no physical effort, like a KEM or COPAG card. Dal Negro cards do return to their original flat shape but you must work at it a bit - bend it in the opposite direction, roll it in your fingers, etc. I was pleasantly surprised at how tough these cards are. They have a completely different feel than any other plastic card and I thought that their papery texture would be more susceptible to being damaged, but I was wrong."
As he noted the cards feel more like paper than any other card. This is something I have said a few times as well and one reason I really like these cards. The over all texture of DN just feels like quality to me. Other plastic cards feel like just that "plastic" cards. Just my opinion of course.

I myself like the Kem California Club cards a lot, I also like the the Copags. The DN cards I am not a fan of at all. Copag, best bang for the buck by far. Quality Kem/Copag very similar depending on the decks acquired. I have the red/Blue poker sized Copags as comparison.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Gemaco Five Star, those are fantastic plastic cards, but tough to find. Bally's AC uses those in their poker room (bridge size) as a Kem substitute. A dealer told me they once used Kems, but found the Gemaco cards more economical......thought that was interesting. anyway, I like:
1- Kem Cal. Club
2- Gemaco five star
3- Copags

Perhaps, but the over all rank was #2 with Kems at #4. I just don’t understand how you could say flat out that they didn’t do well. Anyway, I am probably just bias, I love DN and think they are a much better card.

First off, I would like to state that I am a Kem person.
But the dal negro's are a close second, barely
As far as durability, I seen a DN card catch an edge (like in snowboarding)
as the turn card was being thrown down. It creased it very good. I just sold them to the host and thought they were a goner. I picked up the card, and massaged out the crease, no problem. It had a great "memory" and went right back to shape, and play.
DN does have bridge size as well:
Here is where I picked up mine:

Hi Folks,
The Dal Negro cards did very well in my damage tests. This surprised me a little because I thought the more 'papery' feel would mean a weaker card ... but it didn't. The Dal Negro needed some finger manipulation to get it back to its original flatness, but it pretty well tied the COPAG for least damage.
I stacked 52 Dal Negro Torcello cards against 52 KEM Arrow cards. I had to remove 2 Dal Negro cards to make the two stacks even in height. This is consistent with the measurements on my site that show the Dal Negro cards to be slightly thicker than KEM cards. It's more of a perception thing, the Dal Negros just feel thicker because they feel more like a piece of cardboard.
Good luck, nutn

I really wish I would have bought the bridge size DNs intead of poker size. I have put myself on poker supplies spending restriction, so I will not be able to buy the bridge size, BUT if anyone has the bridge size Dal Negro's in like new condition and would like to have the poker size intead, let me know.

Ok, Ok, geez. I've been away a couple days! Anyway, I don't like to read big long paragraphs I was just looking at the pictures of the DN's in which they were bent to hell. Sorry

That test doesn't make much sense to me. He seems to give way too much weight to the test where he throws cards against a piece of plywood. The DNs didn't fare as well as the Kems or Copags in the practical tests where he bent the cards, and that's all that matters to me. If anyone throws my cards against a piece of plywood 75 times then I'm kicking them out of my game and kicking their arse.

I agree, i think the bend test is the most important one.
also I believe that under normal circumstances you would be happy with any of those sets of cards. To me it just comes down to feel of the cards and I like the kems.
Copag is what im going to buy now though because I dont mind them and they are cheaper.

You can get the Dal Negro cards here: http://www.pokergamingproducts.com/cat_plastic_playing.cfm
I got a set from these guys and really like them. They had fast shipping as well. I compared them to Kems and Gemaco and liked the Dal Negro better for the feel of them. I am going to get a set of the Copags to compare to as well. I have heard that some people were not happy with the font and fuzzyness of the printing on the Copags so that is why I went with the Dal Negro Freedom cards.
