Good or Bad to be considered a "regular"?

Posted Mon Mar 28, 2005 3:56 pm GMT by Sean_in_NJ
Something happened Saturday night that was both annoying and somewhat flattering at the same time. Playing in one of the two 6/12 games at the Trop. I got in late because of the holiday weekend, and I wanted to wait till a lot of the crowds had cleared out. I find myself at an 8-handed game where half of the table are people I play with almost every week. The other 2 or 3 seats rotate out fairly regularly. Around 3am or so, we get a loose-passive who sits down with about $400. He drops about half that in the next couple hours, and then a friend of his (who I'd played with 2 weeks ago) comes over to see how he's doing. When he sees how things are going, he says something like, "I told you it was a tough game." Well, his buddy only played 2 more orbits before he racked up and then the game broke shortly thereafter.

Now, I really like playing at Tropicana and I'm still doing pretty well even on the tougher nights. But, if the number of 6/12 tables keeps diminishing and the bad players start to avoid the games that are running (or get tired of waiting and play something else), should I change games? Change rooms? I've always done pretty well at 1/2 NL the few times I've played, but I don't enjoy it nearly as much as I do limit.

Interesting sidenote: there was a 10/20 NL game on Saturday. $1000 min/no max buy-in. I didn't see it, but I heard there was a LOT of money on the table.

Can you go during a busier time? I dont know about the Trop, but where I play, the 8/16 game from 7-11pm is very beatable, after that, some players show up that really through chips around and mix up their games quite a bit. It makes for fun games w/ huge variance, but tough to consistantly beat.

Each night of the week plays different too. Sun-Tues hard core players. Wed can be trouble if the NL tourney is happening. Thurs-Sat more casual players and young kids until late at night.

I think it's a pretty similar makeup. The problem is in the number of games they spread. It's very heavily weighted toward NL and 2/4 limit, the number of 6/12 games has been dropping off and the list gets longer and longer.

I'm going down for the full day this coming weekend, so we'll see how that works. The $100+$20 tourney at the Taj at 11am followed by a Hold'em binge at the Trop.

I ran into this about two weeks ago. Had a jones right after I got back from Vegas, so I drove down on a Tuesday night. There was one game with a bunch of tough players and no money on the table. Terrible way to spend 2 1/2 hours. (Un)fortunately, with a 2 hour drive to Atlantic City, it's hard for me to make it down during the week and still get to work the next day.

it is rough being 15-25 minutes away Laughing

They dont have NL tables yet-I hope they dont get them. There has been a definite migration in the last year to higher stacks. They have 33 tables-25 or so for holdem. It used to be 17 of those was 2/4, 3/6, 4/8 and the other 7 to 6/12 8/16 15/30 and 30/60.

Now they have 8-10 table 4/8 and below, usually 5-6 6/12 and 8/16 and almost always 2 15/30 table and a 30/60.

Ive noticed this too Dave, if you play on a weekend-night the game is almost too loose. Obviously you want a few loose players but it gets a little out of hand sometimes. I still mainly play 6/12, do you like that there are a lot more of the 6/12+ games? Its a bitch to get seated on the weekends now, it used to be like a 10 minute wait max or immediate seating for 6/12 all the time almost, last time I played on a Friday night I had to wait over an hour to be seated.

That's exactly the problem I'm having now. It doesn't matter how soft the game is if you can't sit down.

I'm just playing the first one for a change of pace. No more than one dead money entry per day for me. Laughing
