Bad beat by a guy with only one out |

In a Friendly No-Limit Tounement I am dealt pocket nines. There are four of us left in the game and I make a small raise. Two players fold and one calls who has 10K.
Flop comes:
8 8 8
I feel good with my full house, but am a little worried about a higher pocket pair, my opponent catching a higher pair on turn/river, and of course an 8. Regardless, I make a bet that is twice the big blind, and he calls.
Turn comes and the board reads:
8 8 8 9
I now have the best hand possible besides an 8. I feel that he is definitly not playing an 8 so I go ALL-IN. He debates and says, "I feel that you are bluffing so I will call." We show and we both figure it is over for him. A king or a ten won't even help him. The river comes:
The board then reads:
8 8 8 9 8
Well........ Now he has the quad 8's with a king kicker, and I am stuck playing the board. He wins the hand by catching the only card in the whole deck that could save him. Wow.... at least I was large chip stack and was still in the tournement and went on to win. But that is truly a bad beat!

That is a tough beat.
The only thing I would say on it is that on the flop you were only losing to a higher pocket pair or the case 8. You correctly deduced that he was not holding the case 8 but should have been worried about him drawing out to 2 overcards. If he was holding 2 overcards (you didn't actually say in your post but I think you implied that he had AK) then he had 7 outs to beat you which is not too unlikely. I think you should maybe have bet bigger on the flop to make him fold - maybe all in. By the time you moved it sounds like the pot odds he would have got would have made him believe that any ace or king would win the hand for him (which it would before the 9 came off) and he would only have needed about 6/1 to make that call.
That said, I have no idea about the way your opponent plays so maybe an all in wouldn't have taken him off the pot.

Well, IMO you should have raised more preflop and been far more aggressive on the flop as well. You made a small raise correct? Unless one of your buddies was terrified you had aces and flat called with 1010-KK...I think you are in great shape. If they have any idea what they or doing they will reraise. In that position I would have bet all-in or the maximum (depending on what the game is) on the flop, since only 1010 up beats you...of course the 8 is a possibility but in this case no one had it, and going all-in of the flop would totally shut out your opponents, OR make them make an incorrect call due to the pot odds with a lower pair or overcards. You would have them killed, but you are totally correct there. You played it...ok, in my opinion, enough to get by but the 4th 8 is killer!
