how to beat the bully...

Posted Thu Apr 07, 2005 2:03 am GMT by kingpin707
I was wondering, how do ya beat people who will raise and play aggresively...they'll raise with hands they suppose to play, and also at times, i know they'll raise with garbage hands, feeding off the fear. Sometimes I'll reraise them with nothing, play back at them and they'll fold. I was wondering, what's the best way to handle those people? I can't blame them for how they play, perhaps i should adjust mines to be like them, because they're always chip leaders. any feed back would be appreciated.

You've pretty much answered your question.. Press back.

If you have decent cards, fight back. If you don't have decent cards, fight back once or twice just to see what he does, and let him know that you're not just going to bend over and take it.

I usually just play a little bit tighter, wait for him to run into a brick wall, and go over the top.

Against an overly aggressive player I will usually wait to use his aggressiveness against him. Slow play a big pair preflop hoping he raises, or do the same with the flop if you hit big. Granted you are taking a risk by letting limpers in, but if the player is very aggressive chances are you will be raised as expected. The worst for me is when i do this and the player folds, but hey Rolling Eyes
Also instead of waiting for a huge hand, check raise the hell out of him or make a big bluff to show him you wont be pushed around, I don't like to show cards but here I would show the bluff to slow him down a little. Of course stack size determines if this is possible.
If he is doing the standard raise pre flop, then bets the flop no matter what comes, pick a spot to check raise. I say check raise because you will find out most of the time if you are beat by his next move. By betting into him he may re raise putting the pressure back on you.
Usually though in the end this guy will get caught by someone if not you, so if in a tourny let him do his thing for a while and someone else may take care of him.
I am by no means a pro but this is the strategy I would take against this type of player hope it is helpful.:D

There was this guy the other night that put me on my first official tilt. I don't know if you would call him a bully but he would literally play anything. He never checked his pocket cards until the flop. It didn't matter if you bet into him, he wouldn't look just call. Then he wiuld be really agressive if he got any piece of the flop. HE was sitting down with his son and his son in law and the kids were better but not anything to be afraid of.

At this point i had been playing solid poker for about 5 hours and had doubled my stack. I get pocket 5s and see the flop for the minimum and it trips my 5s. I bet, call. 4 on the turn pairs the board and im looking good with a full boat. Everybody starts betting and the pot gets pretty big. I ended up with second best boat and third best hand to quads. Ouch that hurt.

Next hand, 4 Club 5 Club and i get to see a cheap flop. it comes 445. Nice another boat. I bet everybody calls. Turn is a jack. River garbage. Again everybody gets going on the betting and big pot. Lose another full house to jacks full. I can't believe it now. the table feels sorry for me.

Next hand I play is Q 8 in the BB. QQJ on the flop, 8 on the turn, ace on the river. I don't remember the betting in this hand, but Jackass next to me turns over pocket aces and i have lost 3 boats in three hands that i played. No more than 6 hands total. After that I never recovered.

I ended up sitting for another 7 hours trying to get my stack back. Ended up down $150. Not bad for 13 hours, but I really lost my marbles after that run of hands. Casino poker is rigged :D

arras,

man, that really sucks dood. i feel bad. that's worse than my full house getting beat by a straight flush bicycle, or when i flopped an ACE high flush, and get beat by another straight flush on the river. Just keep playing i guess. thanks every body for the responses.

Just curious, what stakes are you playing at?

Pretty low, and I realized this was in wrong forum too. It was 1-4, 8, 8.

That's just bad beats man.

Get up and have a cig or a breath a fresh air.

Whenever I get a run like that I force myself to get up, call a friend/girlfriend or something and calm myself down before I go back. Chasing 'your old chips' is foolish (no offense meant) and usually ends up breaking even great players.

Tilt sucks.
