Low Limt - small pairs before the flop |

I've been trying to break out of my "all SnG all the time" mode and so I've been playing .25/.50 ring games at Stars for the last week or so.
Anywho, I'm kind of hung up on playing low pairs in late position with a raise and several callers in front of me. In no-limit, I probably make the call with great implied odds if I flop my set. In limit, it's not clear to me that the implied odds are there. Here's a concrete example:
On the button with 66. Early player raised to .50, three callers. Do you call?
What if there are two callers, or one?
Thanks,
- Nick

If you assume there will be less than 5 seeing a flop-you should fold. Your odds of hitting are only 12% on the flop and you dont want to chase w/ low pairs. Even if you take implied odds, a raised pot w/ multiple callers tells me that several overcards are in play and possibly one or two pocket pairs. So, even a set might not be good (unlikely, but if you both hit it will be VERY expensive-folding is free).
If there is only the raiser and sometimes one othe, a reraise to 3 bets isnt a bad play. If this guy raises w/ big cards w/ no pockets pair, a 3 bet and bet on the flop can take down some decent pots. Just be careful if he is slowplaying a big pair.

Even with 5 seeing a flop, I'm not sure it's a great call.
Early raiser, 3 callers, I call, the blinds fold - the pot is $2.85.
I miss my set 8 times out of 9 => lose 4.00
I hit my set the 9th time, and that probably wins the hand 90% of the time. I need to make about $5 on the hand to come out even, right?

Correct. This should not be difficult with 2.85 in the pot already. Low pockets in limit are a friendly or social hand, like suited connectors. In general low pockets are no good.

In a loose limit game I often find it beneficial to try and see the flop with any pair for one bet on the chance I may hit my set (pays me back fully with quite a bit extra), but don't chase if you don't hit the flop. In any type of no-limit game you want to narrow your field with a pocket pair, but pairs can stand a little more action than suited connectors because you won't be drawing as often. I might raise there on the button to get a better picture of where people stand, assuming people won't just call down anything (which, believe me, can be a major problem in low stakes games).
